So, good news and bad news....

My adorable little Roo has found a new home. He will be leaving Sat with one of his sisters (for company) to go live with 8 loved hens who range in age from 18mos. to 4 years.
I felt that since he is so small (will be 7 weeks on Monday), that he still won't be full sized after quarantine, and he should also have company during that time....so he is going to have one of the BCM girls go with him.

I'm already sad, but I know that if I didn't give him away, he would be headed for freezer camp in the fall...... and he is such a good Roo (again, already!) that I just couldn't bear for him to have that fate.

Sorry, all I have is a side shot of this skinny little butt!

This picture at least has a BCM fluffy bottom in it.

Dr Kevin suggested bringing her in as he didn’t think she would cope with the cold, given that she has absolutely no meat on her. She weighs 820 grams.

You mentioned in a previous post that there is no coccidia inside and it would help her heal. Hubby said she looked miserable today and wasn’t really interested in food. I was thinking that if it isn’t raining on the weekend, or windy, she should spend the day outside and come in for the night. What do people think? She will have her third treatment of Baycox tomorrow morning.
I think there might be ways of keeping her warm in the coop. Hot air rises. With a mild heat source at ground level (like a cat's plug-in warm bed) it might be warmer on the top perch of the coop? You know your own place so I'm sure you'll come up with other ideas for warming up her spot in the coop. Or you could keep a gentle heat source in her crate and put her crate in the coop?

Rehab the Prefab

Since last Friday I have been on a quest to rehabilitate the old prefab coop from 2013. I promised Mrs BY Bob that I would beautify the backyard this year. So I decided that it rotting away in front of the shed was unattractive. I thought that I could paint it in a day and be done.

🙄

Right

I finished the majority of the work last night. I did a quick assembly this morning before work.

I also decided that I wanted to make it pretty so if I use it then it will not "junk up" the backyard.

On Monday my dad was over and told me how insane I was to be wasting so much time on it. This was while i was using a small craft brush to paint the corners of the peach panels.

"Just paint the whole thing with the spray gun and be done. The chickens don't care."

Mrs BY Bob cares.

What do you all think?

There is still work to be done. The nest box is missing 2 bolts, has no floor and no roof. It needs a new coop floor and a new ramp.

Despite that I think I have saved it for a few more years. The run is in much worse shape and will need wood work to be made whole again.
Looks great Bob!

I bought a prefab similar to your's and it's held up ok but will need painting at some point. Maybe next year.

It bothers me that the built-in run of most prefabs doesn't extend out under the nest box. It would be a better design to bring another bit of ground into the prefab. A little more space for chicks or pullets.

Is that something you'd consider doing next time you're de-junking it?

I'm going to. And I'm going to wall it with ply to make it a rain-sheltered and sun-sheltered ground floor space. Chicks and pullets might like it for dust bathing.

It’s forecast to be 16C (60.8F) today. They would be all in the run with minimal sun, poops and dirt, but no standing water. She‘s unlikely to eat all day but I’ll get some baby bird food into her and try her with some scrambled egg. What do you think?
Great idea! I remember Bob Johns recommends adding salmon to scrambled eggs. Just from the cheapest tin on the shelf, not the good stuff.
