I haven't seen any evidence that you are not doing things as well as they can be done. I can understand how you feel about it though. We tend to think we have control over more things in life than we actually do. You're not to blame for everything that happens to you or your chickens. With illness, I think it's more like what @BY Bob pointed out, a bad run of luck, luck of the draw in chicken genetics. It does seem that many chickens don't live past 2-3 years, for one reason or another, even non-production breeds. That's not your doing.

Excellent ! I have to say both Grochatila and his sister Hibou have been behaving really well. It helps that they're sleeping most of the day due to the heat.
But the chicks don't have it easy at all, my rooster has decided he wants to kill their mum and chase them away.

Have you asked Shad why the rooster is trying to drive them off? That doesn't make sense to me.
