Today's plan is to get a screen door for the hen house - seeing as how it going to be 33C come Tuesday...

Yes, it must know that Betty doesn't have anybody else looking out for her while she makes her way in to the coop for the night.


I haven't seen any evidence that you are not doing things as well as they can be done. I can understand how you feel about it though. We tend to think we have control over more things in life than we actually do. You're not to blame for everything that happens to you or your chickens. With illness, I think it's more like what @BY Bob pointed out, a bad run of luck, luck of the draw in chicken genetics. It does seem that many chickens don't live past 2-3 years, for one reason or another, even non-production breeds. That's not your doing.

It is a windy day today.
I must admit that although I am beyond happy that the Hooligans have come out of their shell, the fact that they are roaming freely has me nervous as all hell.
Here is a windswept Bella keeping Bernadette company as she rests her leg sitting outside the Chicken Palace on the lid of one of the pasture runs. Please as always admire her very snazzy snakeskin boots, and just a hint of a green sheen!

Lulu is actually right under their feet inside the pasture run.

Here the big box stores are more for suburban and rural locations, in high density urban centres they have smaller grocery stores and hardware stores.

Those who don't drive are reliant on public transit unfortunately. Or taking a cab. Here in rural areas everyone drives !

It for sure is a different life style between rural and urban living.

Which is why those from the city whole move up here generally do not last very long. The main complaints are for parents commute to work in Toronto, and the kids lack of things to do... They also don't take into account the amt of snow and requirements for almost daily shovelling. And mowing grass likely twice a week at this time of the year. Driving 20 - 30 min to go shopping for anything.... Then general maintenance on a house and property. You either hire someone - if you can afford it! Or do it yourself.

If you live in a condo in Toronto you don't have to do these things!! And your likely just around the corner to a grocery store, and a short bus ride for the kids to recreation centre or the shopping mall....

No buses out here other than school buses!

But the number one thing that irritates me is when citiots move up here get a dog and let it run loose! Or get chickens or ducks and don't take proper care of them.... They just don't realize having animals is like having kids!!

When I was a girl we made our own entertainment, we didn't need recreation places they were about but there was usually the sort I didn't want to mix with in those places and same said for the friends I hung out with.

I found the farm a heck of lot more entertaining. I'd even camp in the fields there

But the horses like it, keeps the biting bugs away so for them will wear my jackets toque and gloves and pretend its actually a nice March day

I stayed home, and didn’t attend church today. But they came out to me, and I got blackberry jam, homemade pecan pralines, (and for the chooks, the extra bread from communion, and….. meally worms! )
