@rural mouse , looks like another feather bites the dustAnother one joins the feather shedding crowd (she turned at the last second). The tail feathers look like half open scissors from the side.
Mine do the exact same thing I have to be out there by 7 am or they aren't happy. Such spoiled feather babies.I feed coarse crumble, and in the mornings I feed it as a wet mash, I use hot water so that it’s warm. My kiddos go bonkers for it and actually wait for me to serve it up
Heaven help me if I don’t have it ready for them!
Another 3 (the white feathers are where both PITA and Blanche were resting). Add Nellie to the mix, and I'm surprised I'm getting ANY white eggs (maybe 2/week). Nox and Mera are laying, a few from Cuckoo and Jess, occasionally one from Storm. The white eggs I've been getting are from Nellie, I think.....and I still have 5 doz eggs on hand. I'm contemplating making eggnog, but with just 3 of us here...holding off on that may be a good idea. Nothing yet from the other girls...except possibly the "fairy" egg (slightly bigger than a quarter, but no yolk). It was speckled. If they take their time and get closer to mature size before they start laying, I'm fine with that. Winter's coming and I lose eggs to freeze before they make it into the house. They all can take a break with my blessing. I think I'm a bit tired. I'm rambling.Oh dear another one molting ….
I was wondering the same thing when I saw that huge muster of crows.@rural mouse , looks like another feather bites the dust
(this is for @Ponypoor 's earworm, as well)
Another feather bites the dust,
Another feather bites the dust.
Another one's gone,
and another one's gone,
another feather bites the dust.

I wonder if our chickens think this is going to be a bad winter? Last winter many of us had chickens moulting extremely late. This year, quite a few have started moulting early. Strange - I truly wonder if they know/sense something we don't? While last winter was hard on plants due to now/little snow cover, and though we had a a week of bitter, bitter cold, the average winter temp was warmer than normal in my area. I just can't believe that it is coincidence that so many are moulting early this year and so late last year....

I've thought of freezing some eggs during the spring 'flush' to help carry me over through the winter slow down in laying. Has anyone here done this before? I use a lot of eggs for fried and/or scrambled and/or omlets. Obviously, it wouldn't work for frying, but was wondering how they are for scrambled or omlets? I would love feedback if anyone has tried this!Another 3 (the white feathers are where both PITA and Blanche were resting). Too late for that. They are eating it up. I stepped outside to close the coop. And check BYCNeed pics of this fabulous meal you made![]()
I think Maggie is molting but she seems to molt on and off throughout the year.@rural mouse , looks like another feather bites the dust
