Poor Dorothy is not walking properly, I think it’s because her feathers are so tender, oh she can run and fly (wow she can get up 4’ even without all her feathers!), so I am sure it’s her feathers.

This morning one of her wing primary feathers was hanging and twisted and obviously causing her distress. So I grabbed it and yanked it out. She was a bit happier but poor gal is so sad and miserable - I have her in the feed room in my huge dog crate- I gave her a raw egg which she ignores. So I have her some chick starter mixed with layer topped with some scratch grain treats - she was keen for that.

Later if it’s not raining I will let her out on mount poopmore to get crickets.

Took these yesterday as I knew today would be miserable with rain.

Sally snoozing under the trees - she is getting her winter coat so the sun warms her too much.

I don’t like the molting process, so much drama and it seems so painful 😖!
:hit
Just remember, though, birds of all kinds have been dealing with this for thousands of years. I agree it looks so uncomfortable...but it is a natural process that they have learned to deal with. (Though I do wonder if our breeding has made them moult more quickly? I never see a naked wild bird...but is it because they don't molt as rapidly...or is it because they are in hiding?🤔)

And, remember, they need good, healthy feathers to keep them warm in the winter.

Gorgeous

Gorgeous pictures as always. And Merle ❤️ ❤️
What kind of fishmeal do you use? The same as is sold for gardens or something specific for food purposes? I am wondering about how to supplement with fish meal. Meanwhile, I am just using starter/grower chicken feed (the insect protein based one).
The stuff I ordered is actually marketed for chickens. However, I didn't check before ordering it but it's very high in calcium, next time I will get the stuff to make fish bait with. I think they don't put as much bones because it has more protein and less calcium.
