Look ma! Twins!
Hey referee, can I get a mulligan on that shot? It’s too close to the building.
In the heat of the moment it may not have seemed like it, but it sounded like a minor scuffle between the girls. In all honesty, in my flock, the most viscous fights have been between hens. If it is short, the boys do not intervene, if it keeps going then the boys will step in. If the boys do have to break it up, they end up trouncing both hens in the process. It was a brawl
I could hear the commotion, and went to see, and there in the dirt for all to see,
Two tiny raptors, jumping to such a degree, one white and one black, a ferocious sight before me.
One would jump up, the other would too, and tearing out feathers and the dirt was flying too.
Fluffy grabbed hold, of Marty’s wee head, and twisted her down on the ground, then Marty fled,
But in flash she turned! and grabbed Fluffy by the neck, and jumped up, feet slashing, what a fight, oh she led.
Now In comes Henny, with an iron will, she jumps at Marty, on the the ground all three spill.
Quick as a flash Rose joins the fray, it must be the wind causing these clashes today.
Henny beats Rose off, and starts onto Marty, but Fluffy is trying her darnedest to be hearty.
Now Rose and then Henny are out of the way, leaving Marty to thrash Fluffy and chase her away.
And quick as can be, calm reigns again, while Fluffy defeated seeks safety from Me!

Oh brother now I have Queens Fat Bottomed Girls going on…Hmmm, me thinks Lady F is going to give Hattie a run for her money in the Fluff department!![]()
All the bottoms are looking good(It is truly amazing how many different shapes a chickens' bottom can come in!!!)
It's FALL. Do not wish fall away.Hey it’s winter, getting in the mood![]()
Well Henny and Fluffy can hold a grudge it seems.
It’s cold and windy and dreary thoughIt's FALL. Do not wish fall away.
I managed to record this one because it went on for a long time.I was thinking of taping it, but for me violence and drama are so stressful I don’t like to even think of it.
But for interest and knowledge sack next time I’ll tape it - likely there are those who have never seen hens brawling. It’s not as dramatic as the boys, and once it’s over it’s over. And only lasts a couple seconds.
My younge cockerels I had here just would t back down! I can see how they would fight to the death.
But when Penelope started to try to break up the fights and a started to get dragged into the fights I knew I had to get rid of them
She is too old to be doing those things.
I don’t mess with their biology, if they wanna go broody, I am ok with it. I do haul them off the nest at least twice a day to eat, drink and poop though. The first summer of broodies (I have four who go broody) I broke my hens' broodiness because of the fighting. I found it really stressful!
This summer, I let them sit for a month or so if they were so inclined. Overall, this cut down on the number of times they went broody, possibly by getting it out of their system?
There was far less stress, as one of my hens injures herself in a broody breaking crate from slamming her head into the bars trying to escape. It's awful and I won't do that again.
The more experience I get, the more likely I am to try not to interfere with their business and it seems to be working (at least for us).
