Let's just say my dad could be a enabler and he does not even realize it. He got to talking about quail. Why when I loved my chickens so much was I not up in arms over building a enclosure and having a few quails. He has no clue what he has started. Quail have been on my mind for a good year now. I have just not pushed the issue that I need them. I think he want's quail and has put the idea in my head as he tried a few quail eggs a few weeks back at his brothers and loved them. I now have a new project for when I'm recouping from surgery next month. I shall pass my time researching everything I need to know about quail. I also already have the materials needed and the spot available for a small enclosure to house about 5 or 6.
Ummmm......just fwi, most hatcheries, like with guinea fowl, have a minimum number to ship of something like 30+....they like living in larger numbers....

I'm thinking 5 or 6 to see if quail work for me. I will not need a huge enclosure, but it will be bigger then what they would need if I wanted to add more. I hesitate because so far from what I've read they cannot be fully tamed. That worries me just a bit.
With your penchant for taming wild chickens, I don't see a problem: idea cloud holding image of quail coop, Rebecca sitting inside, coaxing the little speedsters to eat out of her hand.....

You have to take videos of them in Slow Motion. 🐌

Finally got some fresh bird pics. Y'all are getting them all together.

It appears that at least a few are venturing forth...as long as footings are mostly cleared...

They're making inroads on the sunflowers, and the active ones are mostly those not moulting.

Thing has perked up a bit. Feathers are growing in rather than making moving miserable.

And long-necked curiosity is not enough to venture forth.

Silver is still avoiding most, but her feathers are finally coming through in numbers. The little girls are looking fantastic, too.

PITA has feathers growing like crazy (and has tamed down quite a bit: Blanche hasn't though). Cheetah has a ways to go filling in the patches (and has hung on to 1 tatty flag, seen in pic with Silver).

Jessica is likely going to be one of the first to venture out into the snow. She was checking it out most thoroughly. (And her feathers look to be most of the way done).

Pear had lost her tail feathers, so I'm delighted to see the new ones coming in nicely. She was also braving the breakfast scrum this morning, so is definitely past the initial "I can't move; my feathers hurt" stage.

Your chooks are gorgeous, lovely pictures!

Change of plans…

Need to move horses today (tomorrow the latest) and head out tomorrow Thursday the latest.

Need to be onsite with the CM (Construction Manager) to set up camp worksite office trailers, get stuff organized…. 😊😢

Both happy and sad, happy to be back at work, sad to be away from my horses chickies and family.
💐 :hugs
BUT only for a month then back for Christmas! And them back out there again till Spring breakup 😳

OK today is gonna be CRAZY!
Good luck sending good thoughts to you and I will be waiting for updates here

Peanut's eyes look good today. I did think this morning that a couple of days ago I saw a bit of something that looked like a walnut bit on her nose. Not before or since then and none today. She is molting badly though, tons of fluff feathers were coming out all over the place when I handled her for her Baytril dose. Have pm'd Bob.
Going out again with salt free sardines for everyone!

She's looking really good 👍 😍

The Teens think its to cold 🥶 to go out in the run but demand the pop door be opened anyway. 🤦‍♀️ Picky chickens!

While I was out opening said door this morning, I spent a few minutes in the coop with them and what do I see right at my feet…. Oreo doing that awkward wing dance for Ginger and then making an awkward grab for her neck… he missed her entirely and got yelled at for his attempt by Ginger. Poor sweet Oreo started a few steps to give chase but decided better of it which was likely a wise decision seeing as how he is outnumbered 10:1. I tried not to laugh but failed.

Score from the BidFTA auction!

Cinnamon says hello 👋 and stay warm!
Cinnamon is absolutely beautiful 😍 💖

My concern is that she is showing none of the physical characteristics of a Frost legbar. No poofy toupee, no crinkly comb, no poofy bottom. Instead she looks like a leghorn. If she starts to lay with this little daylight I'm very concerned the egg will be white which would mean their was a mixup and I actually have a leghorn and not a Frost legbar.

Does that make sense?

I did not want another little egg laying machine to fall in love with. I did not want another egg laying machine that lays hers self to death in 2 years. I'm hooked now but if she is a leghorn I'm going to be seriously angry with the breeder.

None of this is her fault and I will love her just the same if not more. I just know our time together will be too short.
I know exactly how you feel :hugs
