When I Pull Up, It's Silent
So, right now is 35 F and for the past many hours, it stopped raining before 6 am so then it started to sleet. Then, snow came piling down. Went outside several times for photos. The news said less than 2 inches of snow and the news wins. A layer of ice greeted me this morning but I wasn't about to break a foot so I carefully went to open the door until I realized the rock to hold the door solidified so I went to grab a hammer. All the chickens were sitting down, even the cat. When I went out the second time, the cat got out of the coop (since it's cold, she sleeps there every night) after we set everything up for her so she doesn't have to get out and explore. Oh well. It has been a day of snow piling down and it is really cold. I'm pretty sure schools will announce a two hour delay tomorrow. Here are some photos from today and some are really bizarre but really cool. How's it in Hershey, Bob?

No, Mozzarella. I don't care how clean your feet are. You are absolutely NOT stepping foot in this house. Yes, I did say "Your house is not a home without a chicken." It was in my signature but I didn't mean it literally!
Mozzarella decorates her first Christmas tree. She thinks it looks ugly. It's missing a star on top, or something else.
This snow is too cold for my feetsies. Summer is very much needed.

This tree looks like a weeping willow in a winter wonderland but it is not.

Thank you. I would love to bring Mozzarella in but she, Parmesan and Tony have inherited the "can't keep still" gene. The second you leave the room, they stand up and want to run and I'm afraid they'll leave feces everywhere around the house. So, for that matter, I usually only bring Grandma in the house. She used to run up to the couch, jump and sit on it but now, she is only allowed on the floor in the kitchen and whenever she wants to go on the couch, we push her back to the kitchen. Especially since my dad is around, we can't have chickens with diarrhea (especially since they defecate a lot in the morning) or chickens that move around a lot in the house.
Poor mozzarella, waiting patiently at the door to come inside. But being left out in the cold.

My parents only allow her inside for a few minutes then out she goes. That's probably the main reason why we don't let our chickens in the house for too long. They have a thick layer of feathers but they can still feel cold.Poor mozzarella, waiting patiently at the door to come inside. But being left out in the cold.

Worst Weather
Today is an example of the worst weather we get. It's not blizzards. It's not hurricanes.
it's ice.
It iced all night and is still freezing rain at this moment. I went out just before lunch time to feed and water the chickens. They were hanging out under their coop nice and dry.
While i was out there I her a huge crack and down came one of the truncated l trunks of the birch tree. Thankfully i got all that dead stuff trimmed and the roof replaced on the coop because down it came.
The arrow shows where it broke off.
Here are some more photos of the ice. Be sure to zoom in on them to see the details.
Just down the street from us a pine tree was sagging below car height.
I would rather 3 feet of snow to this stuff. Very dangerous. This is why I chose a development with underground wiring. Very little chance of a power outage. So far so good. We still have power.

You are right, being inside the house and then going out to the cold is a shock to them.
