I might go to Walmart and get a Silkie this week!
Sorry, but that’s still funny 😆 9DB5DB99-2BD1-4DAF-9F5D-FC0DC39B4036.jpeg

The last time it got that hot I made them a Coolgardie safe. I dug a big hole, tented two fence panels over it and covered it with hessian. Then I dripped water over the top and also put a tarp up to keep the sun off when it came around. They didn't stay in there, but hung around the entrance, still panting. I'm quite dreading it, actually.
Rose was panting so hard last summer she was rattling - I was freaking out! I put the big box fan in the Hen House and turned it on full blast. It helped some, but it was tough on the chickens.

What the Cluck!

it is 14°F (-10°C) out.

And my Yahoo's are playing roosting games. I can tell it was Aurora because of where she had to roost tonight. It was too dark for her to get up on the high roost when she finally roosted.

The main coop only has 3 hens in it.

Where are the other 4!

Well 3 of them in the Cluckle Hut huddled together

That leaves Betty. Where the heck is Betty!?

She was hidden by Lady Featherington's full figure. It's good they are all huddled together for warmth. I can not be angrier at Aurora but I'm happy the other 4 stuck together tonight.

I was thinking the other day how i kind of regretted giving up the freedom in the run to move about if no one was going to sleep in the Hut. I will never regret building it again. It is clearly a place of refuge and may have saved some hens tonight.
Wow that’s chilly!

Looks like there might two flocks happening there, and I agree having the options is great! Lady F likely helps keep Betty warm 🥰

Don’t be too annoyed with Aurora, she is just doing what chickens do…

I thought it was the other way round. I thought playsand had some kind of additive and it was construction sand that was needed.
My confusion on this is why I have never given them sand!
The play sand is what they use in kids sand boxes 😊 no additives in it.

I talked to a gal around here who takes a kiddie pool and puts a couple of inches of water in it (no deeper than the width of your palm) and adds a bunch of minnows to it. The chickens love eating the tiny fish, so go running through the water, cooling their feet. I haven't tried this...yet...
Great idea! Wonder if my chickies would figure this out and catch their lunch??!! Most try this next summer.
