Good morning @RebeccaBoyd how are you feeling today? Do you have your jeans on😊

So what’s up with your broody silkie? I saw your posting last night were someone snuck an egg for her 🤭 I know I shouldn’t laugh!

How is Mama Hen this morning?
My you are full of questions today. 😆

i love fluffy butt acres! and @BY Bob, it’d be great and helpful to start a new one, since with the updating, it’d be easier with less data to download form this large thread!!
I appreciate the thought. This however is the historical record of my ladies. If you want to catch up quick read the primer from the link in my signature and jump right in.

I didn't manage to get drinking pictures today, so here are two from sunday and monday of Blanche who escaped the hawk.
She's a bit of a mess still from the attack and I think the stress got her molting, if that's possible.
She's a brave little thing- she didn't hesitate to go outside and under the laurel tree where the hawk got to her. On the second picture you can see some of the pecks on her eyes and ears. I'm a bit worried that she still seems in pain even though they were very superficial and have healed well, I hope there wasn't internal damage.

She's the craziest smallest of our ex-batt, and she has already made it through quite a few issues, I would be very happy if she heals up.
My partner finds it ironic that this hawk that will eat chicken's brain, got our one hen that doesn't have a brain 🤦‍♀️🙄!

She may be injured or likely is at least quite bruised from the hawk’s talons gripping her body holding her down, they have a lot of strength in their feet just for this reason. Butters lost feathers afterwards where she was grabbed, there were a couple talon wounds on her shoulder and back. She moved stiffly for some days. They grew in a different color too, light golden, she had them until she molted later that year. The pecks as you say could be more or less superficial, you see no skin broken around her neck? The hawk may have been inexperienced, giving you time to rescue her. She probably was squirming like crazy against those talons, successfully avoiding a solid killing bite until you got to her. She’s going to be sore for awhile. For Blanche and you all :hugs

I am more used to C. I understand what temperature is cold or hot in C, not F (still). When I had to use F, I was told a good trick that I am still using to this day for quick conversion.
  • 68F = 20C
  • 86F = 30C (Note 68 and 86 are flipped digits, and on the C side, both are multiples of 10, so not hard to memorize this pair)
Finally, "1C≈2F" in terms of difference. For example, to figure out what is 32C in F, you see that this is 2 degrees higher than 30C, this difference gets doubled to 4 degrees, which means you add 4 to 86, the corresponding F, so 32C is roughly 90F.
Yet -40C is equal to -40F, -39=-38.2, -38=-36.4…. And so on (degrees Cx9/5)+32=F. I have most of the common temperatures in my head (and a button on my thermometer that switches between the two)

40c=104f
0c=32f
-40c=-40f

So yes, 72 degrees in difference F = 40 degrees of difference C. But still, I’m sorry, I just can’t wrap my head around the scale for some reason… although I use F for cooking, when it comes to environmental temperatures it just feels weird.

Dear Aurora,
I think you know I am a HUGE FAN - and although I can never have a beard like yours, I consider you a role model.
I have heard my human servant talk about wanting more chickens. She often has fanciful ideas (like asking me to sit on her lap) so at first I just ignored it. But she has now said it several times and so I am getting worried.
What does she want with more chickens? Surely I am magnificent enough to make other chickens un-necessary? I enclose a recent picture so you can confirm that I am indeed magnificent.
Also, I still have my work cut out for me ensuring that I get the prime roost spot each night and I only have to battle dear Diana for that spot. I cannot contemplate needing to handle more than Diana. Honestly, it is exhausting just to think about!
I think I have to stop this whole idea before it gets out of hand. How can I get my servant thinking on more constructive lines like providing more treats instead of this more chickens nonsense?
Yours in complete awe of your achievements,
Bernadette
