I have two very different roos : a tiny pretty brat, and an ordinary looking but very sweet huge cockerel 😁. I love them both most of the time, but keeping the two of them does make life interesting. Today huge Gaston stood his ground to fight for the first time against tiny Théo....for one minute before running away as fast as he could whimpering.

Just as well, my partner works today and I would prefer having him around when we'll have to patch the roosters up for the first real fight 🙄.

Thank you ! No, the photos did not charge when I read the post, and I could see the videos but not play them. I think I will have to catch up now that 4g network is back on, as I also missed bgmathteach's post on their breeds (which you mentioned to ponypoor).

Do you have a way to lock Babs and Elie in the coop for a while during the day without Bernie and Diana ? That way they would have time to look at the settings without having pressure from the big girls.
But we all know that forcing a chicken's mind on where to roost can sometimes work and sometimes create total chaos!

Happy fluffy butt Friday everyone. @BY Bob and everyone who is at work (or school) during day I hope you get time with your chooks during the weekend! Except @Ponypoor of course but one day off is not really a week end I guess anyway 😉.

Fluffy Butt Friday

Good morning all! It’s a balmy -14C here this morning, just getting ready for work.

But I did manage to capture a couple of fluffy derrières yesterday - who can identify these lovely Butts?

My nerves are shot.
They definitely found it harder to come down from those rafters inside the coop.
I resolved that if they weren’t down by 8:30am (an hour after normal wake-up) that I would brave using a ladder and a shovel handle.
Just before 8am Babs came down.
She flew through the open door to the run (thank goodness I thought to open it up last night just in case). That gave her 27’ of runway and she used every inch of it.
It was like standing by the runway when a 747 comes in to land. Quite an experience!
No sign of Eli.
Babs went straight back into the coop and up on the big roost and talked Eli down.
Eli used the helicopter method - going more or less vertically down to the main roost with a lot of flapping. She missed and kept on down getting herself tangled in one of the ladders on the way. Not very elegant but she seems unharmed.
Here are the two of them recovering from their experience and I am back indoors asking myself if it is inappropriate for me to have a nip of whisky with breakfast to help me calm down.

I am not going to interfere in their roosting tonight!

I have to confess to being a Gaston fan - I don't mind if he runs away and wimpers - better than causing war!
On your idea to lock Babs and Eli in the coop to get to know it, I think they really know it now. I haven't locked them in (apart from yesterday evening which I don't think I will repeat) but they have spent a lot of time exploring.
Bernie is spending a lot of time chasing them but not all the time. There are long stretches of peace when everyone is happy to occupy a different part of the Chicken Palace and several times those have had the two new ladies inside the coop.
It also rather adorably included a long sunbathing session where they picked spots of sunshine that were a good 10' apart so the two pairs could bathe in peace.
I find how they learn to live together completely fascinating.
