I'm getting close to ordering chicks by mail. I've never done this before.

Sooo... if you were choosing among hatcheries... who would you order from? I really want Bielefelders, so that is the first criteria. If you have ordered from any of these places, what was your experience, and would you order from them again?

Cackle
Murray Mc Murray
Mt Healthy
Other...?

Thank you.... getting chick fever here, can you tell?
I don’t have experience with any of those listed (I used My Pet Chicken). Just piping in to say the closest to you by mail would be a good factor to include. Go to your local PO office now and make friends. Ask them how it’s been going with the mail and what they expect and ask for a frank and honest answer. There’s been plenty of horror stories, including on this thread. 😢
If you are satisfied, ask them what they normally do and what they’d like you to do. Mine was a very small office, being rural here too they handle lots of chicks, they had my number and they called me very early as soon as the chicks came in (7:30am). There was no hitch in the mail, they got here fast, and I feel lucky it went smoothly.

Thank you! Yes, I was going to call/visit the local PO, and ask those very questions.

Mt. Healthy is in Cincinnati, and MPL is in Georgia. I'm thinking that Mt. H will be it, as they have just a 3 chick min order, plus the small order fee. Yeah, I'll be paying big bucks for my birds. I really can't take 6, and 10 would be out of the question. I do know that one placed I looked at was sold out of Bielefelders, and they are getting VERY popular, so I don't want to compromise on a different breed.

I'm hoping my neighbor and I can get together and get a chick deal done. :fl

I am sorry to hear this RC. Rest in peace, Diana. You had a great chicken life and brought lots of pleasure to your server. You will be missed dearly but we wish you all the best in chicken heaven.
I really think she did have a great chicken life. Right up to the last 48 hours she was quite perky and enjoyed doing chicken things.
Right now I am sad for Bernadette who is roosting on her own because the little-uns are way up in the rafters.

That’s going to be tough for Bernadette too. :(

It took a long time for Hen-rietta to stop thinking about losing her sister Beetov-Hen. They were always together from hatch day through many years.

We said our goodbyes and she died in my arms.

I am so sorry to read this. My heart is breaking for you. She was a beautiful hen and for a production breed lived a long life. Take comfort in she knew she was loved and got her favorite snack of blueberries yesterday along with some time in the sun.
