I let them sit also, twice a day I haul them off the nest to eat, drink, poop, and sometimes they would sunbathe and dust bathe. But then they will run back to the nest. Dorothy spent about 5 or 6 weeks being broody last summer! Freaked me out but she seemed to hold her weight ok.Beautiful chicken pictures and the scenery where you live is postcard worthy.
Thank you for sharing with me what you do. That is how I plan to handle it as well. I’ll remove the eggs daily, make sure she is coming out to eat if she does to decide to sit for a long while. I don't think I will try and break them per say just support them by making sure they get up to eat and drink until they decide to stop.
I can't speak to experience as mine aren't quite a year old and so far Twirp is the only one thinking about it (and she's never gone before either)
Really?! Sheesh - well guess it doesn't surprise me. Seems my lot in life to have broody crazy bats hahaha! I will have to build more nest boxes then in that case!
Yes she isOoooo! is Belladonna a Dark Brahma? Love those fuzzy legs/feet![]()
Add some of their real eggs to the boxes so there are both in there.I do have fake eggs, ceramic ones in each of the boxes. So far they ignore them completely and go to the back corner of the coop to lay in the bedding. I have never seen a pullet enter the nest boxes not once. I guess they do not like the type I got![]()
@knoturavggrl or better yet, put Oreo in the boxes. They're laying where he's telling them to.Add some of their real eggs to the boxes so there are both in there.
Isabella has never been broody. She really likes her food. I can't imagine her forgoing food!I can't speak to experience as mine aren't quite a year old and so far Twirp is the only one thinking about it (and she's never gone before either)
I second this!If you have not you should enter this one in the caption contest. Oh the fun that could be had with that one.
Exactly my plan unless they are losing weight, Ill just get em off the nest to eat and drink and wait them out.I let them sit also, twice a day I haul them off the nest to eat, drink, poop, and sometimes they would sunbathe and dust bathe. But then they will run back to the nest. Dorothy spent about 5 or 6 weeks being broody last summer! Freaked me out but she seemed to hold her weight ok.
My two silkies spent 6 weeks on the nest last winter - all of February and half of March - just as well also as it was brutally cold for them. At times I think they just decided to stay on the nest because it was cold
Fluffy & Curly last year - note they are also wearing hen aprons - the young Roo was over breeding them so they were losing feathers. I put aprons on them (my mum made them for me!), and it also kept them warm.
