3-6 feet. They move around a bit, but like the higher roosts. My giant roo, Rusty liked roosting around the 5 foot mark too. However, I have dirt/litter floor so the landing has some give.

My roost is 4' right now, that one nest box is over 5', I have about 8" of shavings on the floor. Hmmmm - well when I get home I will see about roost height - its those Silkies; Marty getting clobbered the other night and falling to the floor really bothered me

With 8” of shavings I think falling off 5’ would probably be fine.
Maggie (RIP) was a big hen and fell the 5’ from my roost a couple of times for different reasons and was fine. I have lots of leaves underneath.
Since then I have built additional nest boxes under the most popular 5’ roost so there is less far to fall (unless you roost 11’ up in the rafters of course - I am looking at you two Babs and Eli!).

Well, I’m pretty sure there’s some meatbird (Chunk’s son?) and Marans in there somewhere. Little Fluff/Scarface has certainly turned out to be a lovely Rooster. Even if his mom did hatch out 2/2 cockerels!

I am really liking the Bielefelder (and not only because they are auto-sexing), they are a dual purpose bird and in the future if I decide to get a Roo then I will get my BIL to send the cockerels for freezer camp.

95 days until I get chicks, 95 days indeed. Go to sleep, wake up the next day. 94 days until I get chicks.


I know from later posts it went down. But you really need to get a handle on what is causing it to spike so you can avoid the culprit.

Oh no! I am so sorry for your losses. That is horrible. Glad you caught the culprit in Athena’s case.

Oh he's a beauty! I love their colour - with the red barring pattern - the hens are really lovely also.

I think I am gonna need more that 2 Silkies broody with the size of these chicks hahaha! Maybe one of the barnyard mutts will go broody - Misty or Whiskers - or both!

He's also a sweetheart. He's a big boy, but gentle....except for pecking shoes....they all do that

How do I get these saddles on my chooks lol

slip one wing into a loop, the pull the elastic through the apron, so it's looser to slip over the other wing - then adjust so nothing is too tight or binding. You will need to check these at least twice a day to ensure they are not cutting into their skin or cutting off circulation.

I had my mum make a couple for my silkies.

hahaha - nope no 11' high roosts! It freaks me out to see my Silkies (Curly) up on that nest box!!

Well that was exciting. Babs's monster 2nd egg did indeed have two yolks. I have never seen that before! I ate it sunny side up on toast for lunch.
Now stupidly I cracked her small first egg into the pan first, so now I am confused whether I ate two or three eggs for lunch!
It was fun to have, but I do hope she doesn't make a habit of laying big double-yolk eggs.

Princess laid a few of those. She's not been a regular layer ever since
