True, but one of the most common (not exhaustive) characteristics of the americaunas are beard/muffs. Her egg color will help. I still think she's a barnevelder cross. If she lays dark brown or dark green eggs, that makes it a higher possibility

I have a bird straight from a reputable hatchery who doesn't fit breed standards at all, but does fit a cross between 2 breeds. It can happen anyway.
Even two Arabian horses can throw a foal that looks like a pony! And with poultry it is just so astonishing how many variations there can be! Absolutely amazing really :)

I would say she is a lovely red hen with lovely red head ❤️ For me it's not 'what breed is this', it's more along the lines of 'what colour eggs' and those oh so crazy personalities :)

@TX Chick Noob
I use these to hang apples and cabbages, etc on for the chooks.

They come in different lengths. If you need to hang them from the ceiling/rafters, you can use a chain like such: that you can usually purchase fairly inexpensively at places such as home improvement stores )Home depot/lowes_ or like Tractor supply, and hook them into the end links ( cut the chain to the length you want, attach to rafter with bolt or screw & fender washer) When you aren't using, you can use the plant extender hook to hook the loose end up out of your way, too.

Yes the sun angle is very low and wouldn't be an issue. And the portions that I want to cover wouldn't be excessive due to the trees being in the way (although I can work around them easily if I really wanted to). I doubt my gang would spend a huge amt of time outside in the winter when it's bitterly cold.

The deciding factor is going to be cost - metal vs PVC panels. The 2x12 beams I can't swap out for anything else so that cost remains a constant; but the pvc vs metal would be my decision.

And of course it's such a huge area that covering in the sides will be a challenge also! Plastic (would need to be at least 6mil poly) would need to be suitable for extreme cold, as it gets really brittle below -20C.

If I were filthy rich I would put pvc panels on rollers to roll across in the bad weather and open in the good weather hahahaha!
Just thinking... if you don't think they will spend time outside in the winter and they're happy with the run of the barn, maybe just using sturdy netting would be simpler and less expensive.

I got some netting that I am very happy with from a canvas company in Airdrie, Alberta. I think the netting was made of another material (not canvas), but it has a solid knot in all four corners of each square, so that it can be cut to size without unraveling. It has had held up very well.

I guess that I am assuming that the roof is to stop snow which wouldn't be necessary if they didn't go out anyway, but perhaps you have another reason for roofing your run.

Sorry haven't been on much today not feeling well. Been dizzy all day and weak. I managed to get water and treats to the chooks. Man Cia is first one at that door and try's to leave with me lol. She is persistent and a sweetheart. Officially all 5 of my Ancona hens are laying. I collected a dozen eggs today and filled up my apron pockets. 5 white eggs and the rest colored. My hubby is making dinner and I am resting and hoping I feel better in the morning.

According to the silkie experts on here on the "Silkies are simply Spectacular" thread white is actually dominate white or recessive white. That white bird could be hiding who knows what genetically. I would expect white or buff chicks, but do not be surprised if another color pops out. The lady I got the eggs from that Branch came from at the time only had black silkies. I had a chick die in the shell from internally pipping into the yolk sack, it was white. Later that summer she hatched out some eggs herself and ended up with 2 white chicks.
Hmmm - rather like a grey horse. Grey gene by itself in a horse is dominant (lets say G), but then the horse could have a base colour of Chestnut (red) which is a recessive colour (lets say c).

Now lets say that my horse is Grey but carries the chestnut gene. She can be dominant for grey (GG) in which case she will always ONLY throw grey foals, or she can be recessive for chestnut (Gc) in which case she has the ability to throw a foal that is not going to go grey! :)

I used to love reviewing genetic colour theory - but now I am not caring one way or

Well not really another reason other than a place to get out of the rain, but yes if the barn door was kept open they all just bolt back to the barn if its raining.

What is this place in Airdrie? I see two places: Airdrie Canvas, and GRD Netting solutions.

I am just looking at Airdrie Canvas - I am thinking that is the one?

Oi boy! Just checked out the 50x50 netting and gasped! $600.00!

I will have to think on that, I like the look of it and all but $600 is pricey.... definitely need to win the lottery ha!

Yes, Airdrie Canvas was the company.
