Do you keep the eggs and hold them so that they all are set under the hen at once so they hatch all together? Or do you do something different? When I put eggs under Henny I was very lucky that the gals I wanted eggs from laid them all together (1 on one day, and the other 3 the next day!). I plunked them all under Henny Penny at that point and they all hatched on day 19 overnight into day 20 ❤️ It was so eggciting! I would do it again but for those dreaded Roos :( (poor wee fellas).

Oh but that netting is soooo nice - maybe I will think more about it.... it's really nice stuff! If I got the 50'x50' I can get 3 sections cut out of it to cover 150' :)

Yep my mum collected 6 eggs today! I really only have about 8 productive hens. My cousin's hens (Penelope - 7 yrs; Blanche and Sophia - 5yrs) hardly lay any eggs at all now. They are lawn ornaments ❤️

I am telling myself the new pullets I am getting are for succession planning! My other gals are turning 2. OK I hope you feel better soon.

Oooooo - Hi Little Mill :) you are such a cutie pie!
I"m testing Goose to see if she is really going to get serious and set so I am leaving her eggs alone. Development will not being until day 2 or 3 I think of incubation so it is safe to leave them alone for several days. Like I said, I'm giving her 1 week to get her butt in gear and get serious. She may be doing what Blueberry did all spring and summer. She was halfway broody. Went around puffed up, and broody clucking for months but never committed to sitting until 2 days after I set Raven and Bunny in October. I've thought it out, if I have to have a broody hen right now, Goose is perfect. Her eggs are never going to be huge so are not included when I sell eggs, they are kept for personal use. If she does get serious and down to business she will be limited to 4 eggs. I've witnessed both Branch and Twig breed her. I'm not saying Bubba has not, but, she generally speaking sticks close to Twig. If she is smart and really wants to be a momma she better do it soon while I am in the mindset of "Ok, I will not fight you, here are some eggs." I will not promise I will be as accommodating in a few weeks.

Hmm, yes, but at 16' deep, it could still make it a bit dreary under there late spring through early Fall. Especially if she ends up roofing a large section.

That said, the metal will be much more durable long-term. Honestly, in my opinion, it is a 50/50 dilemma!
I wouldn't be using roofing on the whole length though, I have the pine trees to work around and my Cherry tree and that huge Spruce tree near the barn - oh and another pine tree near the barn. What I would like to do is put some roofing on the section near the barn were the pine and spruce trees are located. This way they would be able to get outside when there is snow.

Eventually I would put roofing in sections further along the run...

At some point I thought Penelope would go broody last year, but at her age I guess that is not going to happen. She has never gone broody.

She did not wait for me. 🙁

But it is a beautiful egg. 🥰

I am both happy and sad for you. :hugs :hugs :hugs

I honestly thought she might not ever lay.

How about a little egg song in celebration. Everyone join in!
