Morning! Dixie is trying to feed her chicks but they refuse to come out. With Isbe there was instinct and she knew exactly what to do, but she’s clearly confused on some bits of mothering. She’s calling them out but nobody is coming and i think its day 3? I’ll probably remove her from the nest and put her next to some food.

I put food and water in the nest box with my mama so that they didn't have to go far; can you do that maybe?

Jaffar was making way too much noise outside, so now he’s inside with us, warm and happy.

I placed Dixie outside to get water and food (she hasn’t had any water for like 3 days) and a few chicks ate. I’m going to name the smallest one who i assume is the last to hatch Twinkie. She has a golden color instead of a pale yellow like the others and I think it fits her.
She was shaking to go under mama and when she couldn’t go back she tried sleeping under her sibling.

Oh congratulations! How wonderful for you and your flock! And you can give your broodies some chicks to raise or even get a Roo and hatch eggs! Oh I will look forward to reading about your adventure

Awesome!!! Buy your own land, I’m not sure where you’re located… but avoid propane heat and just get a 4 season RV or plan to build a quick addition and stick a woodstove or diesel heater in there ASAP. Your dream will take longer than you want, but it’s 100% worth it. So many chickens, and goats, and maybe even cows. Cows are lovely!

right up until I moved into Bob’s thread full time, abandoned my own, then took a brief hiatus completely and worried some dear folks a bit… and about the same time I returned to BYC there were a few “whatever happened to???” Mentions. It’s a big life commitment. I wasn’t able to keep up with everything and keep posting, so I dropped a lot of internet stuff to compensate. It’s also why I barely keep up here, Although this is my Chicken Family .

Beware the chicken Math! Honestly, If you get much over 100-130 chickens I find you start to not connect as closely with them all as well. It’s why I am more close to my Roosters, who then take care of their hens. I still have a few hens I’m close with, but mostly they belong and look to their guys more than me.

You can do it! And if you do start a separate thread/conversation… tag me in! Please… I’d love to be able to make it easier in any way for you, and follow along.

We thought we have moved into our long-term home 2 years ago so we have a lot of crap to be put into storage. Really NOT looking forward to moving.

I don't think our style will be like @Kris5902 as we will have builders to build us a home. We really just want to make sure our chickens be left alone. Once moved there, we will have lots of chickens with roosters. We will eventually dig a pond and have ducks. We also want to get goats.

I am not going to start a new thread because I won't update it regularly. I will for sure post chickens pictures here as much as I can.

Let them be. If she's still on the nest, she's not ready. When she leaves the nest, they will follow. They're still listening to Mama's voice. I've only had NEW mamas, not experienced hands. The babes will follow mom, including scaling up 5 feet off the ground by a week old because mama doesn't want to stay on the ground.

Food/water for the chicks within reach of Mama while staying on the nest will help.
