Chiquita the silkie is almost completely done with her current brood of chicks. I do not like the growls I was seeing out of her in the box, I do not want her back to being broody this soon. Goose has toyed with the idea of going broody for almost 2 months now, it would not surprise me if soon she actually decides she wants to sit. When I went out there Goose was sitting half on top of her mother with her head under her and rolled the egg out and then sat on it. I also have chickens named Squirrel, Bunny, and Ducky, Raven and Grackle. Me and my daughter were talking that next up on the list we need a turkey.
Is it the growling that gives it away? I have never had a broody hen before but I am starting to wonder about Babs.
The thing that got me wondering is her determination to accumulate everyone else’s eggs
It was not until I got this doorbell camera that I understood how capable they are of moving eggs around. She wants the eggs for herself, but only if they are real eggs!

Well to be fair, Buttercup growls like someone from The Exorcist just sitting in the nestbox laying an egg! Meanwhile my silkies are very quiet and don’t say a peep when they are broody or laying an egg, Marty pecks my hands like a maniac! Broody, laying an egg, or just roosting in her nest at night haha.

So I would have to say it’s an individual thing if they growl or not. Meanwhile I do watch while my co-broodies last year keep stealing golf balls and eggs back and forth between each other 😊

Went to take pics and check on my babies. We made sure they have food and water. Hades comes up to me and stands and stares. Its like he knows im sick.

Each hen is different. Some of my girls growl, some shriek and bite, while others just flatted out like a pancake. One of Chiquita's tells is the growling. Normal chiquita, not a peep out of her. When she is actually sitting on eggs, the growling is backed up by shrieking, and pecking.
