Oh I am soooooo happy oh my gosh how lovely! My tree used to be like that until those dreadful rabbits nearly killed it off.

I find this very interesting, and one can say that chickens also lay in a communal nest

I now can't get the image of a shrieking broody dinosaur out of my head!

There are ways around protecting yourself and approaching in teh least possible threatening manner. A good set of kidskin leather gloves and a long sleeve shirt are tops on the list for you if one does go broody. (kid skin specifically because it is thin and pliable - so still get reasonable sensation through the gloves so you can feel eggs, feel her keel bone for weight loss, etc., yet they will still offer a reasonable amount of protection. You will probably still feel it in a meaningful way, but no open wounds, and no ability to actually grab skin and tear it to shreds....,, mwahaahaa...just kidding on that last bit.

Seriously, though, if it happens, try to reach under her from the breast...but sideways, not straight on from the front. And, only do once to check eggs a few days in, and as needed to make sure she gets off the nest if needed. For the latter, gently but firmly grab her around the sides (so she can't flog you with her wings), make sure you are holding her facing AWAY from you, speak and move gently but firmly, and set her next to feed/water and STEP AWAY. See, not so bad after-all, right

Rural Mouse is absolutely correct - some are hands off. You only really need to 'handle them' if they aren't getting up to eat, poop, and dust bathe at least once per day

I haven't, but I will. I think I will use progesterone as you suggested. Will share my thought once I did more research. Does progesterone need prescription in Canada?

This afternoon Wendy took a treat (grape). She did not eat dinner with others, but later she did eat other stuff including chicken feed. I can only say that she is slowly improving.

In many (but not all) US states you can get progesterone birth control without prescription - but you would have to fill in a form with 'your' health information. You can get it on line.

Yes, unfortunately I need a prescription here for any hormone.

There is a progesterone I have used with the horses called Regumate, it’s used with mares that don’t produce a good corpus luteum or the placenta fails to produce progesterone during pregnancy. Humans can also have similar condition and need to take progesterone.

Progesterone is inexpensive here and I bet we’re you are most compounding pharmacies can likely make the dose you need for Wendy.

I am heartened to hear she ate a grape and some chicken feed.
