Gutters are an excellent idea!

Also, I would like to second the suggestion for rock. I have been researching for the outside permitter of my coop and for my run. Here is the best idea I have seen this far: River rock/ pebbles and then construction grade sand to help secure keep it where you put it and give nice footing for your chickens. None of these materials will harm your chickens they also allow for drainage. As an added bonus top layer of sand can be sifted so keeping it clean should be fairly easy.
