@Ponypoor I'm in agreement. 2 pullets. The cockerel has rhe comb already started, but the other 2 I'm seeing pullets...at least for now. Martina isn't rusty toned enough for a roo at the moment.

Sure hope so, she’s a brat but she makes me laugh when she hops up on my desk for a visit and sits on my lap and leaves me a nice juicy cecal poop

We make Vitamin D when exposed to sunlight and so do chickens.
I believe it is one reason they sunbathe.
It used to be thought that the oil from the preen gland was important in making Vitamin D but I think that theory has been disproved.
Chickens are unusual in that they can make vitamin D in response to sunlight hitting their retina. Don’t think that works for us.
In people Vitamin D deficiency comes from being covered up and never exposed to the sun (eg traditional dress in the Middle East), having very dark skin, and maybe also sunscreens.
Vitamin D is essential for absorption and metabolism of Calcium.
It is possible for chickens to have too much Vitamin D but I think it is uncommon and I don’t totally understand it. Unlike vitamin B which is water soluble and therefore near impossible to overdose on, Vitamin D accumulated in fat.
But yes, chickens need sunlight for their vitamin D-calcium metabolism to work.
Gonna haul Rli out again to top up her vitamin D levels!

My sister stopped by yesterday evening. She has to work on Mother's Day. When she arrived Rosie was down at the ring riding Russ with her best friend. She stopped and yelled for us both to come to the car. She handed Rosie a envelope and said Happy Birthday. Then she handed me one and said Happy Mother's Day, Birthday and Merry Christmas. Look inside....Pink concert tickets . Me, Rosie, mom and sis have a date in Louisville come November 11.

My latest worry with Eli is the temperature. It is up in the 80s and she is panting.
I have left a little cat food can with water in her nest. I caught myself worrying about the eggs if she spilled it. They aren’t real eggs!
I have also topped up all her favorite wild water spots in case she comes out on her own.
I am sure I am overthinking this but I do worry about her!

I hate it!
I miss having her around and crawling over me looking for sunflower seeds.
I hate worrying that she isn’t eating or drinking enough - particularly as she was unwell immediately prior.
I hate that she is going to be disappointed after all this effort and I can’t explain that to her so she stops sooner.
That said, she is very cute perching on my hand and running around tut-tutting.
But really I just wish she would stop.
I am wondering if I mess up her nest sooner than 21 days if she might give up.
I don’t think she is a quitter by nature so I am not optimistic about that.

I never actually knew when Jaffar’s hatchday was. The previous family he came from, said in the spring. So I’m designating today may12 as his birthday number 2 for each year. His. Number 1 birthday is near Christmas. Happy birthday Jaffar you great rooster you!

You’re over thinking this

She is doing a natural thing and she will be ok, you are making sure of that.

Get a fan and put in there to blow the air around over her - not too close you don’t want a hurricane!

I took Dorothy off the nest 3 or 4 times a day. Maybe you can try that.
