The craziest thing just happened... I came in with 5 chicken eggs that I stole from Willow, because she couldn't fit all of them. I decided to candle them. Out of the 5, 2 were fertile and developing, so I ran them back out and gave them back to her. She took them and stuffed them under. I'm going to take more and try and get most of them so that I can get rid of any non developing eggs.
My dad also said that he has no say in what "the bird ladies do" -thats my mom and I- and so now I think I get to keep them, just no roosters.
What just happened???

Make sure you candle all of them to check for development, and put a date on them so you know how many are there, I would say no more than 6 or 7 under her to be safe.

Well, sounds like I need a fall hatch then and have 2 boys. They would have the winter and some of the spring to grow up under the watchful eye and guidance of Bubba and Branch.

Um, if I could get enough time off work for a road trip, maybe hatch 3???

That shouldn't be too hard for you .

I would certainly be willing to pay for a good, big boy. I don't need more roos, but I would like some good breeding stock. My last batch of White Rocks (ordered) were very disappointing in terms of size, carriage....which is why I didn't keep any of them. (Part of the reason I kept my red boy- he was very good to the girls and I wasn't keeping any white rock boys. That said, I will not use him for breeding )

Awwww....but momma hen had 11 or 12 under her - she hatched out 11 babies!

It is a great food source for my hens. They love when I empty it.

Does that mean I should get 1/2 dozen of them - so I have enough 'food source' to go around???

P.S. @RoyalChick Notice the green sheen? That is one of my Australorps. They have big, dark, seductive eyes, too. Sucks you right in!!!

They are Jubilee Orpingtons, right? If so, they are known to be laid back and will sit and watch a lot. Lady Featherington doesn't get to sit around a lot because Glynda is her best friend and she never stops moving.

They are indeed Jubilee Orpingtons. Ha! Yes they do!

It is especially noticeable when they are the run and not out and about. My Bigs are pecking about scratching constantly but not them, nope. They settle in a corner together and get up to eat drink or play for a little while then go back to observation mode.

I’ve wondered on occasion if something was amiss with them due to the stark difference in behavior. However, they are growing fast and seem to be thriving so I tentatively concluded that the breed description wasn’t at all kidding when it says they are laid back .

Truly, I do thank you for confirming that, it’s been an ongoing concern.

I don't know if I already said this....
I am going to take ALL of Willow's eggs (if possible) and candle, mark, and then return them. If they have no noticable growth, I will throw them out.
I'm hoping most of them are fertile, so that I will have a crew of chicks
But not too many can be fertile, because then she won't be able to fit them all under her because she is a small hen (I think she would still be considered a pullet)

Nope, no trouble at all. I will set 4 Holly eggs. 3 if not 4 will be boys. Holly just produces boys. I take that back. They all produce boys, every single dang one of them.
