Oh she is a darling - I am going to keep that name for the next Pullet I get, its a lovely name. Sure hope that the new home works out - I bet she would be a lovely addition to any home. I miss having a dog but with my schedule it's just not feasible.

We know this guy and he knows that if he can't keep her then she comes back home to us. Estrella is Spanish for Star

Martina has eyes!

I love the full headdress look on her but this look is for her own good. I guess she is a punk rocker now, time to change up what music you play for her. She needs to be initiated to the 80s rock. Blast some Def Leppard, Guns n Roses and ACDC in the barn now while you do chores. I still think pullet, wattle starting on chick that is around 8 weeks no longer bother me. With breeds that are supposed to have them, hens included.

She is fond of Rock of Ages, she can be seen strutting down the alleyway while that is playing.... I love Rock n Roll.... yes I do!

That looks pretty butchered to me. You don't do human hair cuts do you?

Only with the Horse Clippers - #8 blade - leaves a nice 'peach fuzz'', BIL was not impressed next morning one Christmas - I told him not to drink so much next time! In the end he liked the bald look so much he bought his own clippers and keeps his head clipped. He plays hockey 4 nights a week so easy to deal with a bald head apparently!

I have that going on here today - everyone is hiding in the tall grass and weeds. I was going to mow it down but they are enjoying it so much!

Presumably the babies poop over a relatively small area. Could you catch it in a bucket with some sand?

I could but they nest right in the middle of the alleyway! I had some bucket lids but I kept tripping over them. I once used some small margarine containers, but again I would knock them over. A 5 gallon pail I might not trip over hahaha - but then again why take a chance! Ouch! The worst thing is when they fledge and they poop on everything! walls, doors, me..... they fly and poop all at once.

The big worry is the chicks picking at it, I haven't seen them doing it since - I think they figured out it isn't edible! oooo yummy

Don't you just love when everyone is out together? They are looking less like babies and more like miniature chickens


I have some low dose aspirin for them, and any other meds I have for myself.
And whatever I have on hand here for the horses, Aluspray, Poly-Vi-Sol, eye ointment (steroid, and one with antibiotic), mineral oil, telephone to call Vet....

I have a scale to weigh birds, and 3 crates of various sizes. Magnifying glass, safety goggles, scissors, etc.

I worm with ivermectin once a yr.

Other than that I don't keep too much stuff around. I am close enough to the feed store and my Vet is just up the road.

My only fear is that something catastrophic were to happen on a weekend and I had to euthanize a bird and no Vet was available. I have no idea what to best way would be to deal with a bird in that situation.

Oh yes. I forgot to mention that. I have a bolt gun for that purpose and hope I never have to use it.

Oooh, look at those spangles coming in! (yes, I know I was supposed to focus on the eyes but those SPANGLES....nope, no ADHD here! Actually, I control/compensate for it very well...but visuals are distracting to me ...or attracting to me?????

Ha! The spangles are really pretty, its hard to not look at I was just surprised to see green eyes on a chicken idk why but it just seems unusual to me and all of the jubilees have them.

She really is stunning RC the feathers end up looking a bit like scales on a dragon especially around her chest.

I think you need to learn to "focus" a little more on your work. I find I sometimes need to back the phone up for it to focus close in. Then I just crop the photo.

Haha, I try. I was tapping my screen trying to get it to focus. I really need a new phone, but I will need to ask my parents. They will probably make me save up, but working at the barn mucking stalls probably won't pay much.
My camera is much too broken.

That is pretty comprehensive!
I have Citrical minis rather than antacids just because calcium citrate is supposedly absorbed faster than calcium carbonate.
The only things I can think of that are not in yours are:
- Corid
- Fenbendazole (but I know you don't use chemical dewormers)
- A set of measuring spoons
- A digital scale for small amounts (actually that lives in the kitchen drawer)
- A packet of empty gel capsules that can be filled with other medicines and popped down their throat which is sometimes easier than other ways of dosing.
- Catheters and syringes for direct dosing and crop feeding
- Baby bird feeding formula

I do have calibrated droppers and syringes (and I forgot to add: nail brush and castile soap) Those live in the kitchen ( the droppers and syringes) I don't have a scale, but I've opened an amoxicillan capsule, added a bit of water to make a slurry, and measured/dosed that way.

I should consider Corid (I have - knock on wood - never had coccidosis in my flock - and have never used the medicated chick feed. Now, saying that out louds, I have probably jinxed myself!!!)

Where do you get baby bird formula? I've never seen it in stores! Is it an 'online only thing to be ordered?

Also - you may be surprised at this given what I have done, but I would be really, really nervous about tube feeding - what if I slipped it down the wrong way?? They frequently pull their head up and away when trying to do things with them. Where would you get the small, flexible tubing for that? (and what size??)

I will probably forgo the gel caps - I have been mostly successful with pills...and if their mouth is damp, the gel caps can 'stick' and have to be pushed again.....

All very good suggestions, though. (And, no I don't usually use any anti-biotics. I only ever used it once with crop Surgery - for Crop Girl - as that was pretty invasive - in an 'unclean area' and she was probably too weak at that point to fight an infection if she got one!)
