I'm so sorry for your loss - she was a lovely girl. I hope you can take some comfort in the fact that it is clear by this picture that she knew she was loved. And, really, that is all most of us want (animals and humans) love and freedom to be yourself. You gave her both!

I didn't just give her love and freedom. For a chicken that is not enough. I gave her mealworms. That combined with love and freedom is enough. Dominica said so.

Here's our solution.

Door in the front, easy to open and shut. When chicks are old enough, we can crack the gate enough to let them in and out without the big chickens fitting. The hens can just walk across to the nest boxes....which now they're using both! Video and pics of chick cuteness to come.

Got it cleaned and installed again. Fortunately we had a breeze. We stayed out with the dogs and suffered with them until it was working again.

I like it. 'Suffered with them' sounds nice. I'd like to suffer with Mabel. She's not liking the smoke. Combined with that it's pretty warm. And that there's no breeze.

Mama and babies, who we're calling Uno, Dos and Tres. For some reason the husband thinks they should be counted in Spanish.

Well I could cry right now. The white silkie chick hatched out overnight or early this morning. It has already passed, it did not fully absorb the yolk sac before hatching. 2 of the remaining eggs are pipped and I heard cheeping coming from them. All I can do now is monitor the situation and pray for no more disasters.
