I also forgot to mention. Clean legs do not necessarily mean Marans mixes. We have both French and British varieties here in the states. I have both. You can actually get both even from both parents who have feathered legs. I prefer the feathered legs we all know that. My clean leg girls have had the better hackle markings though dang it. It has taken time, but I finally got a girl with decent hackle markings AND feathered legs. Thank you Lilly.
Lilly is a special lady. You should have included a photo when you talked about how she was perfect like that.

Just saying.

She even had feathered feet for @RoyalChick.
I think it was the heat. She was also very slow according to my siblings. The others were running around.
I am so sorry to hear she died it’s always hard when our pets die, I am glad you still have other Brahma ❤️

I get a bucket with a couple inches of water in it, then I find the little blighters on the branches, shake the branch and they fall into the water in the bucket. They can't fly out that way.

Then I pour the water and beetles on the floor in the barn and watch the free for all! A great seething mass of glistening beetles all being gobbled up by greedy chickens
122 JBs today. Best haul yet.

The chicks now know what it means when I say, "Bug snack!"

What breed/cross are they?
For what it's worth, here's dad and 2nd mom. Likely one or more is hers. She has a lovely beard and muffs.

I can relate - I can't get an organic all flock anywhere around here - my local feed store can't even order it through their supplier. So, I mix an organic soy free layer with an organic pellet grower to make my 'all flock'. The brand I use (which I like for those 2 things) only makes a mash for a starter feed, which gets wasted, so I have to buy the only other organic starter I can find locally, which is 25% more expensive - but at least there is little waste. I wish it was a bit higher protein...but it is what it is. I had bought an organic game bird crumbles that I used to mix with the starter to bump up the protein - I had to order it to be shipped - but haven't even been able to get that as it is on back-order since the first bag.:( With the amount of mixed flocks, you would think they would make all flock! But, I suppose I should be happy - until the pandemic and everyone buying a few backyard chickens, I had to order organic feed online - and though there is 'free shipping', you know darn well that the shipping cost is already built into the price. I really liked that feed and that company, but since I am actually supporting my flock (selling their eggs does not even come close to them paying for themselves! They might pay for their bedding, but not their pricy feed!) So, unfortunately buying the expensive stuff and having it shipped for everyone is just out of the question.
I had to get another bag of layer, but I am mixing it half and half with the Purina stuff for lower calcium rates, I think I might go with a local mills Grower and mix in a 30% supplement with it to increase to protein content to about 17%. The grower is only 15%.

I have oyster shell out for everyone, I noticed my youngster pullets eating it 😳 not sure what that means!?
