Good Morning Fluffy butts and all.
My oldest hen, Plum, has unfortunately died because of 117 degree weather yesterday. :hit
She lived for over six years.
Here is a pic of her before she died.

She was the top hen on the pecking order, But she was sweet and nice. She one hatched out 2 little hens, Tweet and Chirp, but they died. She stayed close to the flock with her two sisters, Stripe and Onaga, but Stripe died because of a hawk. Onaga is the only full barred rock we have left. Plum's other hatchlings, which were given away (except Onyx, which is still here), are Bandit, Crook, Cookie Dough, Z and Onyx. Bandit and Crook were some mischievous twins. They were Plum's indirect sons from Ijak the dominique and Cluckie the Light Brahma. They were silver and black barred with feathered feet and whitish tail feathers. Cookie Dough was Plum's other indirect son from Ijak and Buffy, a buff orp. He had black and white barring with orange and white barring on his hackles and gold on his wings. Z was Plum's real son from Ijak, and he looked just like his father, with the rose comb and the silver and white barring. Onyx, was Plum's real daughter from Ijak and Plum herself. She has the normal black and white barring and nice, robust, well rounded tail feathers. They all have rose combs.

This is some of the history of Plum. The sweet little hen who had a nice flock and family.

Oh I am saddened to hear this, this heat has caused so many problems for so many it's just so sad. Sounds like she had quite the extended family going on there, 6 is a goodly age for a hen.

Is there anyway you can put a large box fan in their coop for them? that is what I do now, my barn is cool, but the Hen House portion of the barn gets very hot in the late afternoon/evening, I have 2 fans going in there.

I could get a old fan up and running from a few years ago.
I was going to use it for my greenhouse but it didn't fit.

Possums are hilarious- we have them here, they are an introduced species and we are still wondering how they are affecting the local wildlife.

I am worried about them and coons getting into the barn, speaking of which I haven’t seen that racoon that climbed the barn door into the barn several weeks ago. But I make sure things are locked up tight here.
We caught an Opossum about a year ago. One of my female guineas went missing, and we tried to catch the suspected bobcat.
Nope, we caught a nasty Possum who was hissing at me.

It's always feast or famine, now I have the person who wanted 3 dozen eggs last week, wanting 6 dozen! I told him I might get 4 dozen for him. Also that I had some pullets growing up and would be laying in the next couple months. He was happy to hear this and more than happy to wait and get whatever I could get him :)

So I might just have to keep all these darn tootin pullets! I may have to rethink this only keeping 13 or 14 chooks. And I may have to just get the Shavings Room converted into a second Hen House. Yee gads!

I was thinking of just pulling out the wall and making it the full 10x10 again, but got to thinking that if I put in a second Hen House then I would have a place to put quarantines, broodies etc. Not that I want broodies mind you, such pains in the fluffy butts.

Speaking of pains in the butt... I have once again been invaded by security breachers.

I am so sorry. Six is quite old for a chicken. It's so sad that they don't live long.

I got my box fans at Walmart - inexpensive and easy to drag around.
Happy Monday! My shed is being picked up as I type! Pray with me that is an uneventful trip!

It's MUGGY today! 90° and 65% humidity. Yuck!

I'm so sorry! The heat is just awful! :hugs

Monday mugshots, of a sort.

Pleased to note that Meanie and Sheba continue to use the nest boxes. For some reason, they keep switching. One day Sheba lays on the right and Meanie on the left...the next day they switch. I found it kind of funny... since they all laid in the same spot all year before now. Silly hens.
My girls do that - silly chooks!

So sorry you lost her - those are difficult temperatures to deal with. She was a lovely hen and sounds like she had a lovely life with you.
