Well this afternoon I had a bit of a scare counting the older chicks - I was counting as usual, 4 white, 1 grey, 6 black - nope 4 black…

Looked high and low was just freaking out trying to get calm so o could figure out who was missing and those darn cockerels would not stop crowing…..

:th

Oh, ya, right - those 2 little monsters, ok 6 black. Hahaha forgot I had locked them away.

As it stands right now, Mr Penne is heading to freezer camp, he once again attacked my ankle biting it, brat! At least Rico doesn’t attack me! Just the hens.

So Penne will join the freezer camp boys, that leaves Floyd/Martina, and Rico.

I wanted to see what Floyd would do today without his brothers around, he behaved so far.
Manny made his first truly aggressive move to me today. We were gone all day and came home to Meanie (for the 2nd time) free ranging her little butt outside of the run. She's not hard to catch as she immediately runs to Manny and gets herself trapped against the run. Turns out that my run, which was never intended to keep predators out, also wasn't keeping that little stinker in! I went to release her into the coop and Mr. Manny decided I needed to be put in my place for daring to touch his lady! He lunged and flapped and never touched me, but he keeps that up and we'll be a ladies-only coop!

Now the good news. It requires a bit of backstory first though:

I was adopted back in 1976 @ the age of 13 months. Back then they did closed adoptions and the adoptee had no way to find any information about their birth parents.

Then many states including the state where I was born passed the adoptee right to know law. At this point I was able to obtain my original birth certificate. I tried to find my birth parents several times since getting it but to no avail. About 6 yrs ago I even went so far as to do the DNA test at Ancestry.com. Still no trace of them only very distant matches. So, I put it behind me figuring that was that and I wouldn’t be able to find out more. Also, my adoptive parents are amazing and I felt I had tried and could leave well enough alone.

Then today I got a message from Ancestry.com. A new match and a message from them. Turns out the message is from my half-brother that I never knew existed and he knew our mom. We are talking and may even visit each other!!

I am floored guys, you could knock me over with a feather 🪶 Incredible science doing amazing things connecting people and now I have a chance to learn about my biological mother and my brother. So cool!!

Are you sure he is 'attacking' you, not just latching on to try to mate? If it is the latter, give him a hen 'beat down/correction" either push him off - like a human hen - or both push him off you and give him a 'peck' with your finger like a hen would - to his head.
no hitting/smacking, etc. just push with open hand and with curved forefinger of other hand, deliver a 'peck' to the back of the head. an angry hen sound, if you can manage it, would be good, too. A couple of times letting him know he can't mate you, and you should be good. Per Shad, it is pretty common for a young cockerel to try to mate with 'mum' first - so I am pretty confident that that is what he is doing, as he has always been pretty friendly/bonded with you. respond just like a momma hen would, as that will give him the message the loudest and clearest.
Yep I got a good peck but he runs off as soon as I turn to look his way.

Rico had his way with Sharpie, but it was acceptance on her part and a true breeding. He walk up behind her, she squatted and he hopped on and bred her. No squawking from her at all. But I did push him put the door after wards as he was eyeing poor Tuff:

Oh wow that is amazing! How cool is that 🥰

A brother wow! Congratulations.

Tho - my cousin’s oldest boy did the dna thing and boy was he ever shocked to learn he had a half sister!

But not as shocked as his Dada!! My cousi’s ex-hubby. Her son and her had a big discussion on how best to break it him gently. Me I would have march right in and said - hey! Guess what?! You have another kid out there. Rip that bandaid off I say!

Seems he had this liaison before he met and married my cousin, the woman didn’t tell him. Oh ya he was shocked! The woman though has decided she wants nothing to do with her new family. Then why do the dna I ask?

Anyways I am right stoked for you - congratulations again! Such great news at at a perfect time to keep you occupied with other thoughts ❤️

Ummm, human servant, you aren't calculating the budget right!

There is only 1 of you, multiple of us - how dare you, the mere servant, get more money for 'pantry supplies' than us?? I see a few tinned mackerel 🐟and some smoked salmon in our future - RIGHT (as the claws slowly emerge and dig into shoulder as s/he is 'purring' the word 'right' in your ear)

Exactly! And as you can see, his claws (and single remaining fang) are never far from my neck.
