The top is open. Does CO2 sink and stay lower than the regular air? I am looking into brooder panels, or I could use the dog crate, thats 22.5” x 35”, with some low cardboard sides put in. I have a cat carrier to use for transport if necessary, but the dog crate is better access with a side door in the event somebody needs to see a vet, because I would bring everybody for company.I agree with @Marie2020 on that!
It really looks like she has been eating something problematic - wood pulp of some sort.
I think oil and grit and mash are just the ticket for her!
On the littles, can you get a new cardboard box for them? I know people use them successfully but I always worry with plastic totes about air flow. Like would CO2 build up inside the tote because there isn’t a way for fresh air to come in.
Drilling some holes low down in the tote would solve that but I don’t know how to stop the edges being sharp. Or cutting out one side entirely and trplacing with mesh with a cardboard frame to cover the cut parts of the tote.
I am probably over worrying - but a big cardboard box that hasn’t been where there might be mold does feel more airy!
I agree, she’s so light. Popcorn is a little tank compared.I gave this a heart because I am hoping that that was her problem, and that she will continue to improve - her weight does bother me - she has nothing left if she has a bit of a set-back - but everything else sounds like it is progress.![]()

Yes. Whether it was a one-time problem or is a symptom of something not working right remains to be seenShe was definitely blocked up. Hopefully she can clear it all now.

I believe both CO2 and CO (carbon monoxide) are heavier than air so in theory could collect at the bottom of a tank. The top is open. Does CO2 sink and stay lower than the regular air? You are a kindred soul in the anxiety departmentI believe both CO2 and CO (carbon monoxide) are heavier than air so in theory could collect at the bottom of a tank.
But countless people have brooded in totes like that so I probably shouldn’t have even mentioned it. I am just being hyper anxious on your behalf.
Probably they are stirring up the gasses enough by running around. But if you have a dog crate and could tape some cardboard around it to stop them running out I would feel happier! Yes, I know, my happiness isn’t the goal here!

Of course if CO2 is too heavy to rise naturally with the other warm air then it wouldn’t work. You are a kindred soul in the anxiety department
So I was just checking on them again before going out to exercise, thinking about the air, and wondering - wouldn’t there be air circulation brought about by the brooder plate on one end warming the air against the plate, causing it to rise and so bringing about a rotation in the air going up and out by the plate- side and replaced by cooler air coming down from the other side going under it?
Yes maybe. And the tote is big enough for that to be the case. But doesn’t the plate trap the warm air underneath it?You are a kindred soul in the anxiety department

Heat a nail or butter knife. Press the hot blade against the sharp edges. It will melt the edges while not burning the plastic.Drilling some holes low down in the tote would solve that but I don’t know how to stop the edges being sharp.
