Great news on Butters! Are these numbers right?
Butters, I am hoping, is making a comeback. We'll see if her gizzard is right. She's been eating a lot of crumbles, and eating seeds, pill bugs and worms, and today I saw a small but normal looking poop. Until today there's been thin weedy poops, and day before yesterday I found an undigested sunflower seed along with bits of seed in her weedy poop (saw her poop it so I know it was hers).

But I also saw another regular poop, possibly by Popcorn, in the poop tray, that also had sunflower bits in it.

She's not standing right when resting, but I'm not counting her days yet, because her desire to eat has just skyrocketed in the last two days. There were no weedy poops today in the poop tray from last night. I did tube feed her 35ml once yesterday morning, but won't today, see how she is tomorrow. Possibly she is beginning to grow more feathers? I see a couple loose ones hanging off her now and then. Hazel's behind her in this picture.

The chicks are still alive and doing well, getting epaulette feathers now. Moved them into a pop-up puppy pen I bought. No pics yet. They have excursions back up into the tote every day, dust bathing and jumping around thereabouts too. Today they got a clump of sod. I have these from a few days ago, did I post them already?

I saw you corrected your plan re the feed ratios, I think that's better than 50/50. I don't remember, what is your protein supplement?
The loft is the least of your worries. They will make you appreciate your cannot fly for crap silkies all the more. The loft, trees, the roof. If it is high once they are settled in they will explore. It will be all fun and games to them, you will be on the ground glaring or shooing them off of places they do not belong. You can join me in muttering about @BY Bob and his joy for leghorns when they drive you crazy. They will do that, but in the end it will be worth it. I think it is only a fair trade off for what humans have done to the breed. We turned them into egg producing machines. They repay us back by if given the chance living their lives to the fullest each day and looking for trouble.Yes they are settled in, I kept my nieces hens with them last night and this morning they were right at the door with the hens impatiently waiting for their morning mash! And when I went in they followed me and tucked right into their morning mash.
Guess I am not too scary ha!
But I am terrified to let them loose in the barn, what if they get loose outside? What if they won’t come back in? What if something happens and I need to handle them?
Also I have noted that unlike my wild things who fly jump and run everywhere these wee ladies don’t seem to know what running jumping and playing is all about. That makes me very sad - and ask myself where they just kept in a factory floor ? Well yes I tell myself of course - these factories would have thousands of birds - and they can’t spoil them with roosts, hay bales, boxes, walls to fly up on….
Maybe they need to be out with the wild things learning these things. What does everyone think? I may just set them free tomorrow in the barn seeing as how Fluffy has pretty much ruined any quarantine. I am terrified at the thought of them running free in the barn. And then there is that opening at the top of the back door for the swallows to fly through, what if they fly up there and get free outside?
What if they get into the loft? Gawd, Rebecca has given me a fear of the loft now![]()
