I couldn’t be happier with them. The Roos are even working out just fine and they are 20 weeks old today so I am beginning to think their good behavior may hold and they can both stay.
LF looks gorgeous, love those beautiful speckles!!
I can't wait to see what she looks like after her molt!

How is everyone doing now that it's September? It's getting kinda cold here with the nighttime lows being in the 50s. I'm contemplating on whether I should put a heater in the coop or not. Last year two of my chooks died in the winter.
How cold does it get?

Hmmmm well it’s been frosty here - real frost like freezing frost 😆 did I mention I hate winter ??? Oh I owe weather whining tax already???

Winters -20 to -30C here - I don’t have a heater in the Hen House but I do have a overhead radiant heater for during the day which old Penelope hogs.

What did they die from? I can’t see it getting all that cold where you are.

First establish what your chooks died from then go from there.

Generally speaking anything under -10C I would have a cozy location for. Otherwise they should be good, just make sure no drafts and no moisture build up.

I honestly don't know what the chooks died from. I've been wondering until now. That's some cold weather you got!

Not the best picture. I’d like to introduce you all to Eli. Pronounced Ellie. I’m thinking she is a black Australorp. I am not sure.
Her head is bald from pecking and over mating. Her back is also bare. She will be separate from my chooks until she grows back those pecking wound feathers.

Ask Rural Mouse who’s winters can be far more brutal than mine.

I would make sure drafts are covered, plenty of air flow otherwise, fresh food and water daily and they should be fine. Chickens are tough.
