My mealworms...
I raise mealworms. Well, I moved them into the little's old coop. There are lots of tasty things inside my mealworms tanks. Today, I went to feed them. And there were a TON of ants. I am very sad. I had a couple colonies that I caught just in time, along with one I sifted out. The others have to be sifted tomorrow. It was really gross. The chickens may get a bonus, as I don't think I'll be able to save all those worms, so I'd feel better if the chooks got them. Ants are a really big problem here.
Sorry. I remember dealing with ants when I lived near El Paso... I'm dealing with more and worse bugs in NC now though... but at least my mealworms have been doing well.

Such an innocent little head cock there!

Who, me, nope, I'm not laying in the hay here. I'm just resting - I was tired is all.

Oh, I have NO idea how those other eggs got there, again, I just needed a comfy spot to rest.

Hmmm, how did I find this soft resting spot, you ask? I think one of the girls mentioned it.

Who? Oh, I can't remember now - one of the non-white ones, thats all I remember.

Sure is a cozy, comfy spot to rest undisturbed, though!

Oh and I suppose those robin egg blue eggs have nothing to do with you young lady?

Hmmm, Buttercup you say? Well now the blue egg I found in the nest box in the HEN HOUSE would be hers.

Oh, Muffy and Butterscotch you say? So they started laying eggs you’re saying? Well now what about the third blue egg??? Hmm? Well young lady??? No comment eh?

9 of them, and almost all want to squish into one of the two nest boxes. Crop girl 'let them loose' about 2 weeks ago now. The other two are actually roosting in the other nest box in this broody hut...but nope, the rest try their darndest to still squish into 1 nest box. (I've seen one of the back ones move, and it ends up pushing and toppling one of the ones roosting at the front of the nest box out! Silly girls.

At least it’s easy to get to those eggs ha!

And I found two more eggs from Sharpie the brat, she laid them on the edge of a straw bale under the sheet, one rolled off and bounced! But didn’t break thankfully.

I need to have some nest boxes built for those brats who won’t lay in the hen house. I am thinking I will turn the shavings room beside the Hen House into a second Hen House for the young ladies, the Azurs and my nieces hens. It’s about 6x10 so a good size, I just need to enclose the top of the summer house wall and put in a window to keep out drafts and cold. Also needs a light and a better door, a roosting ledge and put the nest boxes in there.

I would like to insulate but don’t think that’s in the cards at the moment. I might have enough to do the back cement block wall and the front wooden wall, the ceiling is covered in hay (poor mans insulation) so it shouldn’t be too cold in there for that lot.

My 4 Sophia chicklets have finally started acting more grown up, they are roosting with the Grups normally- though two of them are in a nest box tonight.

I am ok with that, I don’t mind cleaning poops from the nest box. And if it gets them thinking about laying eggs there even better!
