Hmmm - so nothing could be done then.

If I ever do hatch again I would like to try with Topsy, but with her funny beak I am a bit leery, I am thinking it’s from the beak cutting back and it just isn’t sittin properly now. But who knows with these factory birds. I don’t know how ill bred they are.

But I think with her topknot and Mr Ps dreadlocks it might be an interesting cross.

I came across this interesting topic on coccidiosis in bovines and neurological symptoms.

It does sound like what's going on here. I think it's got more to do with toxins than electrolytes out of whack, but both could be at work.

Anna's eyes when they're open - her eyes / eyelids / expression is striking. She looks like a person who has been utterly asleep and is only half-awake, trying to wake up more and see what's going on. But I say this is improvement over hardly ever opening her eyes, and sort of looking through her eyelids, which is what she was doing yesterday most of the time. She is really trying hard to come back.

It helps her to tap the dish where she needs to peck to help her find it, I hold it higher than a normal chicken needs, otherwise she just pecks the air and doesn't go low enough. Others jabbing at it next to her help, though she often swings off to the side, encounters my fingers holding the dish, and follows them down, and I move the dish over so she's pecking in it again.

But she appears to be slowly improving. She is eating much more now, and drinking regularly, and wants to be active more. But she needs help to do it. I spent today hanging with them, feeding and watering her, and then hovering with her when Anna was active, monitoring what she was trying to do and helping her do it, because she's not steady on her feet, and it's as if she can't see well where she's going, she's kind of blind. She can see something, I think. She knows shadows and looks for shadows to rest. But I think she goes by sound mostly.

Anna can and will fall off any edge. Not only is she not real steady on her feet, it's like she doesn't see it. If she happens to place her foot right on an edge she wraps her toes on it and stops there, weaving unsteadily. But if she instead steps a little further she will flap fall off. So I've been cradling her when she gets close to an edge, hands just touching her feathers on one or both sides. I lift her down when she gets there if she seems to want to go. Give her a hand to climb on and lift to get back up too. She can't see well enough, or isn't coordinated enough to jump-fly.

She made at least three expeditions today and otherwise rested in the tote under the shade towel, moving to the panel warmth, or the side wherever the Spuds were fooling around outside. She explored and then rested in the shade of the tomato and bean plants in the box. Later the Spuds sunbathed on the warm garden step and she joined them but put herself under several overhanging bean leaves.

She did poop a more normal poop today, wet but with some shape to it and the urates looked normal, and it was darker, less green (bile) colored. Yay! Previous poo was bubbly green diarrhea with very loose urates.

This evening I tried to let her hang on the brooder platform with the other Spuds, but staying on the shelf liner, and stopped her twice from falling off. The others went to their roost spots, so I put her in the tote but she leaned against the side wanting out, and seemed to like being held, so we had a nice spell together, her snuggled down in an old wool sweater for warmth on my lap. Then later she was fine settling on the hemp in the tote near the warming panel.

How do I make her love me? How can I compete with him? The language barrier is a big issue with our relationship, but that doesn’t stop me from trying!
Sure he’s handsome and witty, but I can support her much better than he can!
