Today I stripped all the old bedding from the Hen House and while I was at it I removed the roosting ledges and finished putting up the poop liner on the walls.

I sprayed down all the empty nest boxes, then put everything back, the ladies were very interested in what I was doing and I had such a hard time keeping them out of the way.

This morning I checked on the status of the lice, still lots of mobile little monsters. A real nice side benefit of the ivermectin is that the chooks are wormed, as such I noticed a dead roundworm in one of the poops, glad I was able to worm them now if there are round worms.

Not sure who did this poop but glad they are getting rid of their parasite load; also can see some intestinal shedding.

What is the issue with barley straw...?

I've never seen barley straw, so just for information. Here all I would be able to find would be wheat straw.
Barley heads have sharp barbed ends on the covering of the seeds, they can pierce skin rather like the barbed heads on foxtail, and it tends to be rather sticky and coarse.

Soft wheat straw is the best. I have some really great, very fine soft grassy hay that I have used in the boxes.

Use something that is soft and nothing that can poke them in an eye or something.

Thank you. I'll remember that.

Grandma wanted to see her babies once it got dark. If she wants to hold a chicken, she is getting to hold a chicken so off to the coop I went. I ended up bringing Owly, Dottie the speckled Sussex, Judy the rock and the the newly named Spooky inside one by one. Spooky is the solid black now 100% pullet that Raven naturally hatched and is now a keeper. For 30 minutes she was loving on and petting the chicks and happy. She allowed me 2 pictures while she was holding Owly under the condition they did not hit facebook. Well, this is not facebook so here we go.
