@ChicoryBlue This is where I get mad. You did what you could because they did not feel the need to return your phone call. They created a situation where you were forced to act without them. This is their fault.
I couldn't agree more. With dogs and cats you often have more time to react in general. I went through this with when I had ferrets as well. They also can go from fine to crashing in the blink of an eye. Help has to be rendered on a timeline that doesn’t fit typical veterinary response time. Often there isnt even enough time to load them in the car, and we are forced to do whatever we can to help them survive. A little empathy for this from professionals would be deeply appreciated.

I'm very sorry this was your experience but sadly it was what I suspected. You have to be careful what you share these days. :hugs :hugs :hugs
Interestingly the vet I take the chickens to (who is just a general vet, not a bird expert) is very conscious of the issue. Without crossing any professional line she was super happy that I could send blood off to be tested at a private lab so she wouldn't have to report anything.

I did jury duty once. It was fascinating!
I did it once and I was disgusted! Neither the prosecutor nor the defense attorneys did their job, and it was regarding rape of a child under 14 (11 y.o.) I was in tears that night.

These guys are roosting, but

these (3 weeks younger) are still forming a cuddle puddle in the nest box! They have 2 roosts all to themselves, and only 2 of the 9 use them. Hopefully, soon the rest will start to.

One would need to be using Baytril INDISCRIMINATELY and for long term to cause Campilobactor resistance. Your one time use of it for an obvious illness which they were not willing to aggressively treat was justified. You chick is teeny tiny and cannot be allowed to just shrivel up and die.

No Baytril is not a permitted poultry antibiotic but you can bet my sweet little fluffy tush that is being used ‘off label’ all the time.

In fact 99% of the stuff we treat our poultry for is ‘off label’ and or illegal for use in poultry. La-te-da, if it were my chook I would treat. You did the right thing.

Furthermore I came across a study that was done for treating Mycoplasma and Baytril was more effective in treating it than the other drugs.

Many time Vets do not have the time to do individual research on treatments and thus do not know what is being done.

This article compared three different antibacterial agents against mycoplasma

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18679898/m

Seems that the UK is further ahead of the US in poultry and Baytril

https://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/?id=-479259

And actually sulfa drugs are to treat coccidiosis not mycoplasma as far as I know of, Bob would know better likely.

And lastly here is some heavy ready regarding use of such said antimicrobial meds up for discussion here, nowhere do they ever mention campylobacter resistance….

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3801280/

ANYWAYS….

YOU DID THE RIGHT THING. Do not second guess yourself. The Vet is just covering her arse. :hugs

Since I'm so late I am enjoying everyone else day what I would have @ChicoryBlue

All this vet has done is keep you from being honest with them moving forward.

Oh how upsetting.
Mine was much more trivial and I was horrified by how the police were not really buttoned up getting random facts muddled up.

It was quite interesting. The police said the guy had turned from street X to street Y where the crime was supposedly committed.
One of the jurors was a local cab driver and he said that turn was physically impossible because of a concrete barrier.
And as it happened I had to go that way to the courthouse so was able to confirm what the cab driver said.
It was a whole palaver with the judge about whether we were allowed to use factual knowing from outside the trial.

Jury tax: The Odd Couple.
