I’m spending some time with Jaffar today, because he’s not too popular with his ladies, and I don’t know why
Being out there in the yard alone is no fun. So I’m feeding him and letting him watch TV

@ChicoryBlue This is where I get mad. You did what you could because they did not feel the need to return your phone call. They created a situation where you were forced to act without them. This is their fault.

To be clear I did call them again four hours after the first call, and the word relayed back to me by the answering person was to finish the Corid treatment and re-evaluate after the weekend. But I was re-evaluating then and there, because it was obvious to me Corid was not doing anything. It was close to 5pm? and I felt their day was done. I didn't press to pile everyone in the car and get an emergency visit that late in the day so I don't know if that would have been possible. I was upset. They did ask for pictures to try to see what I was describing. I'd have to check the date/time stamp on my phone, but it was after I saw the bubbles in her eye in the pictures and remembering Peanut's bubbles and then doing a review again of mycoplasma and putting it together that I took matters into my own hands, fearing waiting could mean permanent blindness for her.

I couldn't agree more. With dogs and cats you often have more time to react in general. I went through this with when I had ferrets as well. They also can go from fine to crashing in the blink of an eye. Help has to be rendered on a timeline that doesn’t fit typical veterinary response time. Often there isnt even enough time to load them in the car, and we are forced to do whatever we can to help them survive. A little empathy for this from professionals would be deeply appreciated.

Besides the lack of urgency, I'm mad about the lack of empathy for me taking action to help this creature.

Interestingly the vet I take the chickens to (who is just a general vet, not a bird expert) is very conscious of the issue. Without crossing any professional line she was super happy that I could send blood off to be tested at a private lab so she wouldn't have to report anything.

So remind me, did the vet draw the blood but you sent it where you wanted?

All this vet has done is keep you from being honest with them moving forward.

This is so true. And my ego is mad, I feel I got lumped in with some broiler farm's widespread use of antibiotics. Related to feeling heartlessly lumped in too was when the issue of avian flu came up. How people's chickens are all euthanized within a certain radius whether or not there is avian flu present because they don't want to bother to test really upsets me.

Yes! She had me check with the lab what vial was needed and how much blood. Then she took the blood and taught me how to do it myself in future. I then took the vial and sent it to the lab.
Incidentally, she is a stickler for the rules, but is happy to discuss outside of the rules. So I could ask her a hypothetical and she would answer and then explain she couldn't provide that treatment. Of course this would all be much more useful if she was an actual avian vet!

Thank you so much for this. We all are caught. Your vet sounds great, even though she is limited in her training.

Here's the Spuds on the high ground. I just stole one of the heating panels from the Bigs for them. Since they aren't letting them near their dry warm corner! Ida's voice doesn't sound good, and I'm watching for other signs. She is wanting to sleep here, though the others were up preening. Not sure if it's just the rhythm of the day or if she is getting more symptomatic.

I see a pullet, her hackle feathers do appear pointy till I zoomed in and then I can see its just the feather pattern they are all nice and rounded nothing about her says Rooster to me. She may well lay early or I have noticed among my older mixed breed hens (all the exact same age) that their level redness varies greatly. So perhaps Cash will just have a super bright red comb and wattles when she does finish maturing. For example:

Upon reflection I realized if she were a Roo she would be crowing by now - sheesh these chickens try me at times! I had a flashback to the Roo drama and panicked.

I did it once and I was disgusted! Neither the prosecutor nor the defense attorneys did their job, and it was regarding rape of a child under 14 (11 y.o.) I was in tears that night.

these (3 weeks younger) are still forming a cuddle puddle in the nest box! They have 2 roosts all to themselves, and only 2 of the 9 use them. Hopefully, soon the rest will start to.

I would make sure I were not selected for jury duty for that exact reason, gosh 11 ; yup buddy would be run over with the tractor and planted inder 40 acres of corn problem solved.

The Sophia chicks snuggle together on the ledge, usually next to Mr P if Marty let’s them Sophia has absolutely no interest non them and pecks them to go away! I would have thought they would snuggle with her but guess motherly love only goes so far

But I was happy with how she mothered them, for a senior first time mama she did great. If she goes broody next summer again o will give her 2 Dark Brahma

Yes! That is absolutely what happened. This person missed the mark on creating an educational moment and helping the poor wee little lady.

Have to say the older Vets around here we phenomenal back in the day training us livestock owners on how to treat our animals.

These days they want to do ‘yearly herd health checks’. I told the Vet when she came out, that I had horses when she wasn’t even a zygot in her mamas womb, and that as a Nurse I had a lot of experience in treating not only people but all sorts of animals. I didn’t need her to tell me what was up with my horses… thank god Berndt is still semi-practicing and old school in wanting me to take care of minor things myself.

Mind you he doesn’t know anything about chickens except that he loves my eggs hahaha. He relies upon me to inform him of what I need. Thank goodness for BYC and FBA helping me with things. Around here small animal vets cannot look at poultry because they are classified as ‘livestock’ - such hogwash….

Don’t lump me in with the factory farms were chickens are bopped on the head for looking sideways.

It was quite interesting. The police said the guy had turned from street X to street Y where the crime was supposedly committed.
One of the jurors was a local cab driver and he said that turn was physically impossible because of a concrete barrier.
And as it happened I had to go that way to the courthouse so was able to confirm what the cab driver said.
It was a whole palaver with the judge about whether we were allowed to use factual knowing from outside the trial.

What a hoot I likely would have burst out laughing right then and there. I am far too outspoken to be a juror, likely would get thrown in jail myself ha!
