If I had any doubts Poppet was used to being handled they have been completely erased. I just went out to let everyone out of the coop. Once it was empty I let poppet out of her box I kept her in last night and showed her where her food and water was. I then squatted down to stay with her for a few minutes. She stopped eating and came over to me and hopped up on my knee chirping away. I rubbed her crop for a minute which she seem to like and next thing I know I have her up on my shoulders trying to snuggle into my hoodie. If it were not 40 degree's out and my turn to be on morning duties for grandma I would have stayed out there with her all morning. I have already lost her though, she is not my hen. Rosie claimed her yesterday. Apparently Owly and now Poppet are her personal chickens.

Congratulations! That is the best news.

I just took Coco out and opened up the coop/run. Another fun chickeny day!
I’m sure Coco will tell the others about that bet, and I will have laughter in the yard all day!

Laugh it up buddy, in reality I don’t have any chickens - chicken math don’t you know.

Meanwhile I have a new chicken breed here, a BR silkie, Fluufy seems to have sprouted an extra special tail feather there…

And I can’t wait to see how Larry’s jaunty tail feathers grow in, I gave the ones still attached a tug to see if they were loose but seems they are solid (sorry old girl).

Mom had to run to the store so I introduced Poppet to grandma. She fell in love and was fascinated with her head poof. She thinks I should call her Minnie Pearl, but agrees Poppet is a fitting name as well. Grandma is using her electric blanket this afternoon and I had a towel placed on top. Poppet is a fan and just snuggled right in and took a 10 minute nap.

Now that is what I call a good pairing so glad you were able to get wee Poppet

From an evolutionary perspective, survival of the fittest and all that, you would think that being able to silently traverse the jungle floor would be an advantage.
So why are my Princesses so LOUD? There is always someone chattering about something and usually at least two of them yelling.
Hush ladies. It is bad enough that the local foxes know you are here without informing the ones in the next county over!

Ya seriously what’s with that?!

The only time they are quiet is when they are snoozing. And then someone has to go and shake things up - Raven stop it!

It's not even Easter!

Don’t laugh - today I found 4 blue eggs, I was all eggcited thinking one of the chicks may have laid one with the Azurs.

Then I stepped on something in the hay, so I moved to hay away and it was another blue egg! And it didn’t break when I trod on it! Or even crack.

I guess what’s happened is a couple times when I only found 2 blue eggs the chooks must have scratched loose hay over an egg hiding it, since I don’t know how long they were hidden I will just chuck them.

Today I finished up the roosting ledge and new nest boxes in HH-B, the Azurs checked it out and tried out the nest boxes.

Tomorrow morning I will get out here extra early and make sure the lay in the nest boxes and not on the loose hay on the floor. Hopefully after a couple days they will feel good about the nest boxes.

Remember, Cats are afraid of chickens. When I had just 8 chickens, my Roo sounded the alarm when he saw my cat. BUT...instead of running away...the chickens CHARGED the cat - with my Roo Sir Lancelot in the lead. The cat was always wary of them thereafter and would RUN and climb the nearest tree if they even looked at her crossly!

My point in all this - maybe they are trying to sound like a very large, invincible flock ????

Why not mark the 'old' eggs and put them in the nest boxes - give them the hint that that is a good place to lay! Then, once they start laying in there - remove the old eggs and toss them then.

BTW: Gosh, she looks tiny in that long nest box. A nest box built for two, perhaps??? Or is it to make 'mom' more comfortable when she is incubating eggs???? (Hint, hint, Sophia, Curly, & Fluffy!!!!)
