This idea would work! Just get creative. Chooks will find the craziest place to lay their eggs.If I started over again, I would go with the shed idea add perches and find old drawers and wooden boxes to attach to the shed for them to lay their eggs
Oh, and one very wonderful little rooster named Jaffar. Knight of the Order of Nardol the Brave, recipient of the Black Medallion order. And Champion for the Queen of Fluffy Butt Acres. Her Royal Worshipfulness, Aurora. Sir Jaffar also acts as the local Magistrate of Cluckingham Castle and surrounding areas in the land of California. My coop is an old mechanics shop, that was broken down into two parts. I rebuilt it with the extra lumber found around the property. I only paid for paint, chicken wire and baby chicks![]()

All hail the Queen. All hail my Lord and Master Sir Jaffar Alexander La-Roo.![]()
Sylvie is one of the babies and started laying a while back. Then went broody, gave up on her own, and now is not laying and looking motheaten.
Piglet started laying after Sylvie and lays a tiny blue egg most days.
Tassels just started laying and lays a small army green egg several times a week.
No eggs yet from Calypso or Pooh. Pooh has looked ready to lay for weeks but has shown no interest. Calypso has almost no comb development - I assume she will wait until spring.
My two older ladies are Babs and Bernie. Babs lays a big blue egg every day. I keep telling her to take a break. She shows no sign of molting either.
Bernie lays a lovely dark brown slightly spotted egg roughly twice a week - she stopped entirely as she molted but in the last few weeks has given me a couple of eggs. She isn't fully over her molt yet.
Awesome! Wait, is it Babe’s or Cash?First Egg
And we have another first egg! From Cash, it’s an odd colour one I would describe as olive.
Here it is next to one of the Azures, and Misty’s blue green egg.

I am not far off saying those Hoover chicks would lay before those school chicks!
I would say it’s the post-broody mini molt.I am worried about Sylvie.
Either the bullying by Piglet was worse than I realized or she has some feather issue.
She is all bald around her neck - it is hard to get a close look but I think she has pin feathers coming in. I hope that is what I am seeing.
She has not returned to laying since she was broody and her comb is not nice and red.
Do you think she has just stopped for the winter maybe?
She is sleeping in the nest box and I am not trying to stop her if that is where she feels safe from the demon Piglet!
The odd thing is I don’t see anyone pecking her during the day - this is all about roosting time.
It makes me sad.
But at the same time I hope that is what is going on and not some weird genetic disease that goes with her weird coloring.
Any words of advice or reassurance from all you more experienced chicken people?View attachment 3687081View attachment 3687082
