My neighbor just had two chickens killed in her run. Decapitated, but the head was left next to the body. She didn't see any blood left.

I'm thinking raccoon...?
The resident predator keeper-awayer thinks it's too cold to go out at night now. :(

Their run is uncovered, so this could be a big problem. They're gone for 10 days, and another neighbor (her mom) is taking care of the chickens. But she can't be there all the time.
Raccoon is possible. Rats are possible. I tend to think of weasels first though, decapitation is a weasel trademark too, and they will kill without eating or removing more than one body. They kill everything they can in a frenzy, then take one. They are very fast and bold, and can easily take down prey bigger than they are.

Fisher (a big weasel basically) is possible too but I haven't heard of it killing indiscriminately like the small weasels (I don't know, just haven't come across that info), I think it would kill one to eat (take the body).

Weasels and raccoons will come back until they are all gone or they are prevented from getting at them. Fisher likely too when it's hungry again. Very sad situation there 😢

🎶 Are you going to Scarborough fair, dressed in feathers, legs wings and thighs. Remember me, I’m the one you saw first, loving you rockstar till the day that you die!
Ad lib. So what. I can’t sing anyways!

Egg / chick update

There are two! And yes the one will be a frizzle. It seems to be the seeker of the two, even though it was born first. Will keep an eye on her.

Both only have 4 toes so no silkie toes, I think they both have leg feathers but not for sure, but I didn’t want to keep them from mama too long it’s cold here.

And both are white! So I am glad the one is frizzle so I can tell them apart haha!

Oh they are adorable. They almost make me regret my decision on breaking up Raven and Goose. Almost, last few days have been cold.

Yes it’s cold here, I am glad I have the office I can put them in.

But I have found that they are tough little suckers. And mama Henny will keep them warm.

I still have Curly and Marty sitting being broody the brats. Don’t mind Marty she is bald and can use the warmth of the nest.
