So this is really her first winter. If she hasn't stopped by now she likely won't. In a week the days will start getting longer again. I feel this is not unusual for a hen her age. The best thing would be if she went broody in the spring and took a break.

How much more darkness are you hoping to create? Frankly, I don't think it will matter. If this amount of daylight hasn't stopped her I don't think any less would make a difference. She will keep laying

I fear you are right. I got about half way through the blackout, and there was no moon, and I turned off the cameras, and she was still up well before dawn to lay.

Thirsty Thursday

Being a connoisseur of wild water is just like being a connoisseur of fine wine. Undertones of tannins, light, almost sweet tones of maple leaf, etc. Takes a very deft palate to discern the lovely notes and tones of various wild waters!

Yes, you say this NOW - AFTER she has ambled up on that shaky ladder and stared death in the face!

Well, it will help trip her up when she goes to check on them at dusk - in the 'extra dusky' coop! So, there is that!

On a serious note, @RoyalChick - do be careful and be sure to wear your headlamp in the 'enhanced darkness'!

This is a cool new use of moulted feathers! (and plucked ones when they are processed - I assume one would have to be careful that they aren't contaminated/bloody - unless the actual processing of them takes care of the sanitizing.

We all know how the coop looks when a hen does the explosive molt!

Not a great picture of Squeak getting a drink on Thirsty Thursday, but the best I could get. She is celebrating laying her first egg! 53 grams!
