After one last external parasite check, Perry moved into her integration home today! It’s a tiny coop with a 2x6 ft run within the Fort Knox run, across from the sand box so the other chooks can spend a maximum amount of time in relaxed mode near her. Securing a cover for it was tricky but essential, since pullets Albert and Whiskey love to fly up there. View attachment 3709527
Looks good.

I think her and Aurora conspire on how to look both regal and bored 😁

Lots of rain here, amazing amount of rain. Then it turned to snow, but very little accumulation. Looked like there was a moat beyond the new French drain dug on the two wet sides of the run, but the drain worked well and the run litter is dry, the pavers and woodsy / decomposed wood chips soil I piled under the litter are just nicely damp. The trench did its job!
That's great news! 👍 Good work getting the drainage right. I know that was not easy.

We leave our pets at home if the place we go isn’t pet friendly. It’s not polite to bring an animal to such a place and it’s stressful for the animal.
We don't go where our dog is not welcome. If it's not possible to stay at the person's house, we'll get a pet friendly motel.

We boarded our first dog when we had an emergency trip out of state. She knew the people (our vet), they loved her, we paid for extra "individual play time," (they all wanted to play with Shadow!), and she still came home with a stress-induced bladder infection. We agreed that we'd never board a dog again.

You aren't wrong. But, I feel guilty rehoming him. He hasn't done anything wrong. He's pretty. He isn't mean. It's not his fault he's a boy. I feel like I'm discriminating against him or something!

I'm ridiculous. :th
I feel that pain. It is not easy to say goodbye to an animal that has done nothing wrong. It is also important to remember that chicken math includes subtraction. This is a long commitment to a chicken and a way of interacting with your flock. You should think hard on this.

Hah, one day I’m sure we’ll do this. Right now they’re still three years and nine months old, so the parents stick around for the unsavory bits (night wakings, meals).
My sister would drop of her ordest when she was a baby for a sleep over 😁 I would say she was only about 3 months old then, it was more so my sister could sleep haha.

We never had any problems with any of the kids - if they woke at night we would change them in low light, give them a snack of a small bottle, which they never finished as they would fall back to sleep. 15 min tops awake! Not sure how my sister would spend hours with them awake…?

When my two lovers got older them would sleep over and play ‘camping’ we put a huge foam ball n the living-room floor and they sleepy there 😊 NOT in our beds that’s for sure! Sheesh those kids where all over the bed sleeping - legs arms flailing rolling around - one could get a black eye from them sleeping! As bad as the cat taking up the whole bed - pushing you off the bed hogging the covers 😆

Can’t wait till next summer for a thunderstorm to give the chooks another ‘lake’ to play in!

Winter Equinox

Today will be the day with the shortest daylight hours, and the longest darkest hours of the whole year. Sunrise is around 8:30am today and it will get dark around 4:45pm.

But going forward the daylight hours will gain time and the darkest hours will shorten - I will be happy then, day break will be around 4:15am and night-fall will be after 10pm 🥰

In about a months time I will really start noticing the longer daylight hrs - and if the weather cooperates this winter maybe my chooks can get a little outside time when I get home from work!

Last night on the Summer House Cam

All lined up snoozing - love how Raven and Larry snuggle all alone.
