This island is like chicken heaven. Roosters crow at 1AM in the morning and wild hens pop out of bushes with their chicks.

Merry Christmas!
I woke up and baked apple bread, which was delicious with vanilla honey butter.

Around dinner tonight both sets of parents will be over to open the last of kiddos presents and set up her new dollhouse. We're having a very peaceful holiday out here, it really does feel different living in the country in a house big enough for the three of us!

The girls got a bowl of water and a dish of chopped veg for their feast.

Samara making sure Morinth got food to eat, she's very protective of her. They were hatched together by my friend.

Gather round the bowls, y'all!

Xzit was acting just like Diane. It took me forever to get her trained not to bite me or flair those hackles at me. But it was worth it, because now she’s a well mannered hen who is also respected by the rest of the chooks.

Treats and lots of hugs, lots of time spent talking to her then more treats and lots more hugs. She finally got tired of being aggressive and calmed down.

I suspect they think of you like a mother hen. I have seen chicks as they get bigger and bolder, challenge mom and move ahead of her in the pecking order -after they have been abandoned but well be fore they start to lay - so like similar timing to when roosters start their idiot phase.

There are quick challenge runs at each other that I see, and it does seem more frequent than it used to be, so yes this could be like that. Diane Ida-iot? Hah, so where am I in the perceived pecking order?

Woke up this morning to single digits (F), but clear skies. Egg supplies AFTER making eggnog and deviled eggs (cooked 3 doz for those)

Shan is very much Cheetah's daughter. Not sure yet if she's going to reach her mother's statuesque size, but her eggs are like her half sisters, Lark and Indigo.
