Oh she is so good looking! Another impeccably maintained beard! What happened to her toe?
I can only assume 1 of 2 things happened when she was about 3 months old. She either sliced it on a piece of tin digging or one of the horses stepped on her toe. She came off the roost perfectly fine one morning. That evening when she got back on the porch to be packed to the roost the tip of it was gone. She never limped, and all bleeding had stopped and it had already scabbed over. All I could do was keep it clean and it healed completely in about 2 weeks.

I think netting is a fantastic idea, but for proper peace of mind I would have the barrier extend all the way to the ground (such as netting + fencing).

A hawk flying through a tiny hole:

The netting I got my girls for their run extension. It has saved them at least a dozen times from air assaults that I have personally witnessed:

Thanks! I have watched the Ellie video many times and even posted it here - scary, but an incredible bird!

I leave my crow’s unsalted peanuts all winter and they clean up any cat food my cats leave uneaten every morning. I consider it tithe for all the work they do helping keep the sky safe and sending out alerts!
Serious question on feeding the crows. Do you just scatter them around and hope nobody else eats them?
It would be well worth my while to feed the crows, but there are a lot of critters out there!

I took my camera out with me for a short visit with the chickens. Some of these may be reposted next week but I wanted to share them now.
A grouchy leghorn for @BY Bob , If I want flogged reaching under a hen who is not broody, reach under a Marshmallow. Yes, I did reach under her, it is 34 and feels like 29, those eggs will freeze before I get back out later.

Spooky is also reddening up in the face. She is your type of girl @RoyalChick . I really wish now Twig had not been a jerk to Branch. Spooky is the only Twig x Goose chick I managed to hatch out and keep making her a 2nd generation Silkie x Marans cross. I really really like how she is turning out.

Gorgeous birds!! My special love to Owly, Bubba, and Blueberry.

I feel the same way about free ranging. Initially it was my plan to do so. However, having lost one pullet to an animal attack I can’t justify it. I do as much supervised free range time as I can. The winter has made it less than I would like but everyone is doing well so 🤷‍♀️. We all do the best we can.
Yes you are absolutely correct. We all do the best we can, and our chooks enjoy our company as much we enjoy them, of that I am sure.

Enrichment comes in many forms and our being out with our animals is a form of enrichment.

Its been pretty cold, so I sadly have not spent alit of time doing more than going out toping off water, inspecting the coop, and collecting any eggs.
However, I can resist adding spots to the collection!

I also would like to feed the crows and Ravens, but the darn squirrels just steal everything - this is the one reason we stopped feeding the birds. I have thought that I would put out boiled eggs, and meats, but worry about other animals hanging around.
