I can only assume 1 of 2 things happened when she was about 3 months old. She either sliced it on a piece of tin digging or one of the horses stepped on her toe. She came off the roost perfectly fine one morning. That evening when she got back on the porch to be packed to the roost the tip of it was gone. She never limped, and all bleeding had stopped and it had already scabbed over. All I could do was keep it clean and it healed completely in about 2 weeks.

Yes you are absolutely correct. We all do the best we can, and our chooks enjoy our company as much we enjoy them, of that I am sure.I feel the same way about free ranging. Initially it was my plan to do so. However, having lost one pullet to an animal attack I can’t justify it. I do as much supervised free range time as I can. The winter has made it less than I would like but everyone is doing well so. We all do the best we can.

I haven’t seen this video before - it’s rather extraordinary seeing her flying like that. What a beast! Quite terrifying.
I also would like to feed the crows and Ravens, but the darn squirrels just steal everything - this is the one reason we stopped feeding the birds. I have thought that I would put out boiled eggs, and meats, but worry about other animals hanging around.
