The chooks got out today while both kiddos were taking afternoon naps. They’re especially starved for greens at this time of year, so unsurprisingly headed straight for the lawn.
Perry nibbled a few blades here and there, then headed for higher ground. She seemed quite content with her vantage point.

Her One month of being adopted just passed!
I have the luxury of being able to take her integration slowly, but I do wish we would be further along by now. She still spends her days behind a protective fence. I think the real inhibitor is that I don’t have much free time to chaperone visits. And since they’re run-bound, it’s not really a safe space to just let them duke it out and have her flee from the bullies.
I’d welcome advice if anyone has any, in case there’s an approach I hadn’t thought of. Should I post this question on one of the forums?
Not sure how big your enclosure is but I know many of us have obstacles to hide behind, or under, places to get out of the line of sight from the others.

Something as simple as a board placed for n a roost to hide behind away from others eyesight is great.

I have a big rock, that I crawl under, when it gets really tough around here! :barnie

They see a camera.
Excuse me. You're not allowed in here. You're not letting us go outside because there is white stuff everywhere and we don't want our feetsies cold.

I can’t really complain about the weather with the temperatures that @RebeccaBoyd, @rural mouse, and others are handling.
Nonetheless it is cold and windy and nasty here and the Princesses are barely going out into the run.
Bernie put on a show of bravado for about 25 seconds. And then saw sense.

The mystery of the prints in the snow is solved. And watch past the end of the Chicken Palace - s/he has a big friend (parent?) in tow.

I think I need to hot-wire that area so they don’t get too used to coming around. I have a wire on insulators already fitted and it would not be very hard to connect it to the live terminal. But the ground is complicated because they are elevated up on the open run roof.

If I have enough spare insulated wire I could run a ground wire directly back to the energizer maybe. I need to look up if that is safe to do and see if I have enough wire. And maybe it doesn’t need to be insulated. Need to look that up too.

It is so cold out there I find it hard to do more than a few minutes before I need to come back in. And I think my brain cells freeze up too.

There I was scanning the barn cams, and I was going through them, got to the office/feedroom cam and was startled to see Red in there - for one moment I thought darn did forget to close the door?! 😳 then I remembered I put her back in there due to the extreme cold.

She has made a right royal mess in there !!

And seems that Blanche and Penelope, Rose also joining them, decided to go and roost at 3pm - they must be chilly, poor kiddos

And not 3 months till better weather and lighter daylight hrs. I noticed this morning it was starting to get bright at 7:15am.

Sleep is for the birds tonight. I have had 30 minutes and I give up. Grandma is having a spell tonight where every 30 minutes to a hour she is needing something, or seeing something. I think she finally may be settling down but me and mom agreed no point in laying down right now. The hospice nurse is supposed to be here early this morning. Right now we are tired but functional. If either one of us laid down to get a hour or two nap and then got up for the nurse we would be dead to the world and feel worse then we do now. It is also 0 degrees outside. 0 people. I cannot remember when it has been this cold. As soon as it gets daylight I have got to bundle up and get outside. My horses and chickens need water. No question it froze overnight. Water hose froze over 2 days ago so I am having to pack them inside to fill. I am so ready to send this weather back up north where it belongs. There is about 8 inches of white trash on the ground. Thankfully it is a dry *cough*snow*cough*. It might be bitterly cold but at least it is not soaking the layers of clothing making outside chores worse.
Oh wow that’s nippy! The one the ng with that cold weather here is, we are used to it and have the facilities to deal with it (water trough de-icing, barns, etc), I feel for those who are not used to getting this weather and struggle with the frozen pipes and such.

Oh and leave a tap running so your water doesn’t freeze up - just thought of that one!

I might whine and complain about the weather here but I know that am set up to handle months of it, not like some of you in the lower latitudes, gosh I really feel for you all 😟😟😟
