Thank you both. I know relative to all the trauma on the site right now it is a minor issue, but I did feel bad when I saw it!
I feel like her other nails look like an OK length. I didn't get to the others or to beaks today.
There was a lot of lounging around in the sun while I was fixing the electric fence.

It was a perfect day for lounging in the sun. I did some myself.

I went out to take pictures of beaks and toenails so you guys could advise me on whether they needed filing and immediately noticed Sylvie.
She seems to have lost a toenail and the very end of her toe looks like it might be necrotic!

How would something like that happen?
I feel like a terrible chicken tender for not noticing.

It doesn’t seem to bother her and she is digging with both feet so I don’t believe it is infected or painful.

But WTH? I know Tassels tries to eat my fingers, but surely she wouldn’t actually swallow Sylvie’s toe?!

WDYT. Anything to worry about? Left foot, middle toe.

I would say that if she isn’t lame, digging as usual, and eating, then I wouldn’t worry about it.

I agree with both @BY Bob & @rural mouse

If you are able to tomorrow, soak the foot in epson salt & warm water, and using a soft brush, gently scrub it so you can see what is really going on there. I suspect. like the others, that it is dirt - maybe a little bit of scab - but hard to tell for sure...could be JUST dirt.


Anyways, after the soak, then the gentle scrub, check it out. I know you are a worrier - but I also know you are a VERY COMPETENT nurse if/when the chickens need it. Once you can see the toe well - you will know - and either it is good, and you can give her a mealy worm (or sunflower seed - I know you have some!) for her trouble - or it may need a bit of disinfecting and wrapping - or maybe be scabbed over and look okay, but a bit of triple anti-biotic and some wrapping.....you will know what to do - I have faith in you

And...whatever the outcome, once Sylvie has enjoyed a nice, warm foot-soak, with a treat, too, she won't mind the indignity of being picked up and carted off....especially if you do your special ear massage that Babs falls asleep to!

I took Jaffar for his girls. But he couldn’t open his eyes to greet them. Maybe it is a temporary trauma thing like last time. I’m hoping and praying so.

Warm and quiet. He can spend the night with you. Maybe bring Coco in for company. But keep him quiet and warm.
