I keep a 18"×18" paver in each run. I usually keep them under a feed dish. I see the chickens running their beaks and nails over it pretty often, I'm guessing they do that to file them down. However, they may be sharpening them in anticipation of me falling down.
Yes that’s it eggsactly :gig

I finally managed to stay awake long enough to get Sylvie off the roost after dark. I gave her a bit of a foot soak - only a few minutes - and then had a good look at the toe that is missing a toenail.
I think it is fine. She may even be regrowing a bit of a nail. It is a bit hard to tell because of the scales - but one looked like it was the start of a nail.
While I had her all bundled up I had a go at filing a nail using one of those electric dog nail trimmers (I got it a long time ago for the cats who won't let me anywhere near them with it!).
All I can say is that I hope Bob and Pony are correct and I don't need to do anything - because trying that on Bernie would not be easy!
Does anyone use clippers rather than a file? Her toenails didn't look much tougher than Nightshade's who I can clip (sometimes).
I will wait and watch Bernie's foot and hopefully won't need to intervene.
I also tried to correct the Babs roosting situation. I started by removing the flat panel heater - so she roosted on the mounting bar for the heater. I could remove that - or maybe cover it with cardboard. In the meantime I got Babs to stand on my hand and brought her down to roost next to Bernie. Hopefully she stays there!

Okay, all, I won't be on here for a bit. Hubby's old computer (very old) now won't open this site because it thinks it is bad security wise (really, it just can't update security because it is so old). I snuck on today through my work computer (I'm on vaca today), but will have to refrain until I break down and buy a new, personal computer. Since I like desk-tops & REAL keyboards, it will be $$$ so will have to wait a bit more - until we actually SEE our raise of July last year (only 2%, but with retro/all at once, it should be enough to help make a dent in the purchase price!)

Progress on the secure base for the 'Red Coop'

Industrial grating - cleaned it up and used rustoleum deep rust paint before putting on the bottom

Bottom 2 'rows' of the base with grating (grating will be on the underside, the framing is upside down at the moment to attach grating to it.)

The helpful digging crew - making sure I was digging properly and they helped 're-level' the site at each stage!

And level

First 2 layers of the base set.. (Yes, it met the inspector's approval!)

(Edited to add: Yes, I filled underneath it with sand and worked it through the grating to be sure it was full - and 'the crew' helped me 'scratch' it through the grating anyplace it wasn't QUITE filled, ha, ha, ha)

.now to attach remaining (too heavy to move if everything was 'finished' before placing!)

Almost done!! Just need to put in the front cross-member, and create a 'door' on this backside for easy 'rake-out' when needed (and, of course, fill with dirt!.) The hard part will be lifting the red coop onto it - That will be a weekend thing with Hubby's help.

Once coop is placed, can start 'trenching' for the buried wire for the run which will be attached (well, built and attached)..to make it rat proof for the chicks.

The chicks will arrive the week of 3/25, and I plan on brooding them in the mudroom for a couple of weeks....should have the rest of the pen done by then:fl:fl (@rural mouse : mud room is almost fully cleaned out - now need to scrub around the louvered windows so tape will STICK and I can put up plastic sheeting to prevent breezes/drafts)

And, a couple of actual chicken photos for real tax:

Happy Fluffy Butt Friday, all!
Great job! That is looking great!

Ok all - I need to go do chores I have been procrastinating as it’s damp and chilly, but the horses need their night hay, and I need to round up the brats they don’t roost in the hen house - everyone have an awesome evening 💕

I just love him. You did the right thing borrowing him, rather than the white one.

I use clippers that you would use on a cats nails. Work good for me.

I am going to need something with more power to do Mr P’s spurs though - and they need doimg soon - he is starting to have them interfering with his gate. 😳😳😳

Maybe the horses hood nippers might work if I had someone to help me - gosh poor roosters in the wild how would they manage?

Oh that is helpful - I feel like I could have clipped the nail in a hot second whereas the filing was drawing out the whole process.
That is if I need to do it at all - I am pretty sure I don't need to on Sylvie - but I will keep an eye on Bernie's curled toe.
