I have a lot of alfalfa pellets and hay, I've seen they are good for the birds. Hay is not an alternative to straw right? I need to leave it in the run instead of using it inside the coop?

I wouldn't use hay. I've heard it gets mold spores very quickly. Do you have pine trees? The pine needles make a great play surface.

Nope, not two miles. Less than one mile, stupid me. Gumbo is gone, thank goodness. I hope he does well in his new home. I’ve not heard him crow yet.

I meant instead of being placed in the soup pot. He probably is going to a new place where he can get cared for.
