So, someone who shall not be named scratched his big butt and then sat down on the stall boards breaking them and partially tearing down the big roost.

You heard me, I said you have a big butt.

We fixed his stall and then dad had a bright idea. One that unfortunately has really really ticked off the chickens who HATE change. He decided he was tired of replacing tarps covering the hay and decided to move it to the barn isle.

Right now that is holding 15 new bales, once the first cutting comes in he is going to extend it and we will stack our normal 50 bales there. That means the chickens got a new roost.

They protested, loudly. They can get up there, only 3 did. I had to wait until dark to place the rest up there. Some of them flat out refused to attempt it and instead marched themselves off to the coop to sleep. Branch, who of course cannot fly well, he was determined he was going to sleep there and he made it up. I got him down and put him in the coop. For a chicken who cannot fly well that is not going to work buddy, I am sorry. Oddly enough the leghorns, who you would think would love that roost, yeah no, coop for them.
Now for some Friday Fluffy Butts. It is chilly this morning and this is the best I could do with my grouchy uncooperative group.

His crop was full last night but it’s empty this morning. So he’s processing his feed correctly.
He’s being shaky like he is cold off and on.
Poor guy! Maybe he feels cold, do you have him with you on your body, or on a heating pad he can move on and off of if he wants? Hugs to you both :hugs ❤️

For all of you talking about earthquakes.

The Earth Hath Shaken
The news was even on Beakbook.
Yesterday morning, at around three in the morning, I was woken up by my Dad, yelling for my sister to check chickens that were making a huge ruckus, like the sky had fallen or something bad had happened. I woke up, and went outside. They were fine. Dominica had gotten loose when my Mom had checked them, and had ran to my door. Felictas saw my leg in the light of my watch and snuggled up against it. I picked her up, and she started to scream. The light from my watch is something she recognizes, so I turned it on, stuck her in the coop, and then went back to my bed perch (per Josey's crazy rules).

Later that day I heard there was a 5.5 earthquake a few hours from here and that it was felt here in the city I live in. We almost NEVER get earthquakes here, so this is a rare thing. And it would explain why those chickens made a ruckus. One probably fell on top of another and caused the Empress to squak up a storm.

As far as I know, everything is fine here, and nothing broke. Except my sleep.

Did anyone else here in Texas feel it?

They are 2 weeks old now right? From your description I bet you have a pair on your hands. The bigger chick, look at its face nightly. A spikey comb is a sign of a boy, but what you are looking for is wattle development. A good 90% of my pure Marans boys pop those wattles between 2 to 3 weeks. If you can grab clear pictures of their faces. Lets see them front on to look at combs and a side profile to look for those wattles. For me tail and wing feathering have never been reliable to sex the Marans. It is those combs and wattles.
Okay, I got the pictures. Oh man.

Tall and lanky.

Petite and only just getting wing feathers.

It doesn’t look good 😬

And since I was at it, I checked the OE as well. Mina is the only one with nonexistent wattles! The others either have them, or have cute little placeholder wattles but that have in fact grown.
