Curly

Well the two chicks under Curly seem fine; she is doing all the right things, chortling to them, and tidbitting calling them. The Lav Orp is very active and curious, she was out from under Curly wandering around when she heard me out there. I dragged the M Marans out from under Curly (who wasn’t overly happy with me bugging her babies), I showed the wee ones the little tray of feed and the LO the waterer.

Both babies know how to run and wiggle back under Curly who does her little shimmy and tucks they up with her wings. I think she will be fine.

Whiskers got dragged off her nest twice this morning to eat drink and poop her smelly broody poops. I am still furious at myself for trusting her implicitly- I never should have left her. But it is done and can’t change the past.

I am now turning my thoughts to the chicks my niece is hatching at her school.

2024 School Chicks update

Two of the blue eggs have hatched and two more of them have pipped.

First one out

This one just hatched

Edit:
So far none of the silkie eggs have pipped- I am getting a bit worried.

Furious, sad, upset :hit

Whiskers has killed here two chicks I put under her. I was only up at the house an hr and ran back to the barn to check them. She had killed them. She has lost her chance to ever have chicks ever again and this weekend she will go to broody breaking jail.

I really thought she would take to them, she was at day 19.

Now I can only hope that Curly keeps her babies. She did the shimmy and tucked them up under her so I can hope she is a good mama.

I have only had good luck with my broodies so to have this happen is a total shock. I guess I won’t be fostering babies on hens anymore, too much risk of harm to the babies - and not hatching eggs either, too much risk of Roos.

:hit:hit:hit
Oh goodness, I am so sorry Kelly. This had to be heartbreaking. ❤️‍🩹 :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs

Just landed in Nashville. I got video of landing and taking off. They are long videos though, so if I post them, I will have a time stamp for when I actually take off or land. I’m not even off the plane yet.

Pastel is separated from the girls so that the chicken sitter doesn’t get killed 🙄 I gave him a bunch of meally worms yesterday. The only thing I’m worried about is him overheating.

I took the leg bands off the Polish’s yesterday. I put looser ones on.
I feel awful - they were way too tight. I kept on saying how I needed to take them off, but I never did.
Athens, Aphrodite and Calypso didn’t have bands. Nemesis did because I thought he was a hen for the longest time. His leg band was almost too tight to get off. I was so scared that I wasn’t going to be able to get it. It cut into his skin a little bit, but not too bad. I feel like a failure as a chicken mom now though.
Everyone else’s weren’t too tight. They are still growing so fast though, so if I waited to take them off until I get back in Monday, they would be too tight.

Here is tax that hopefully also doubles got Thirsty Thursday:

Yes, I was almost shaking because I was so worried. I was sure that I’d need to take him to the vet when I got back if I couldn’t get it off.
The girls were okay but I was still so worried because it was still very tight. I had to use these tiny scissors to get them off of everyone. I had my pocket knife just in case, but I didn’t use it. The scissors are super pointy but they suck at cutting. I was so worried that I was accidentally going to poke one of their legs. I didn’t thank goodness. I didn’t need anything else to feel bad about.

You did great in that case! Good job! I would also have been freaked out.

I have seen horses with halters embedded in their heads from owners putting a halter on a young horse and then not removing the halter as they grew. Those owners get some very strong words from me. Can you imagine trying to cut an embedded halter off an 800lb crazy yearling?

Ok well you did a great job, when you get back you can check them again 🥰
