I candled the eggs late last night. I will do it again this evening to make sure what I saw, doubt it will change though.

I have 14 eggs developing. All 6 of Poppets eggs, she is a fertile myrtle the wee little thing. Now for the shipped eggs, there are 8 out of 22 developing. Considering the distance and time it took to get here I am thrilled. Both of Betty's 2 bonus eggs, 1 fluffy and 5 curly eggs. Sadly all the Marty and Henny Penny eggs looked to be clears, nothing at all. Immediately after candling I will not lie there was disappointment over the lack of a Marty chick. I woke up with a new perspective. I always said my personal worst nightmare would be if Momma hen had snuck off and hatched chicks sired by Branch. The thought of a pullet from those 2 was terrifying. Add in silkie perpetual broodiness on top of Momma Hens evilness, the world did not need such a creature. I guess the world also does not need the personality combo of Teddy x Marty. I dreamed of such a creature, and maybe it is for the best that they exist only in my dreams. In truth I went into this hatch with 1 goal. Someway, somehow end up with 1, just 1 black silkie pullet. Seeing the results of Kelly's chicks that hatched out, and what I have developing, I feel confident I will be able to attain that goal. Rosie may also get what she desires, a black frizzle pullet that is destined to be named Black Betty.
That would be sooooo wonderful

😊😊😊😊

I am hoping my one curly chick is a frizzle pullet. But guess I would have to wait to do a gender test to see if ao, and not sure I want them hanging around for 8 weeks.

Oh well what’s another chicken :idunno

You just single handedly destroyed the Canadian air defense capability!
Ooooo be careful! CFB Borden is next door here 😁

They are very noisy lately. Usually means they have training for something or other going on. Usually with other countries personnel on site.

I’m thinking about getting another six chicks. 12 I have is fine, but six more would be better. I have room for 100 anyways
I like this idea. I also think you need at least 1 feather duster. I promise 2 days will be all it will take. He/She will have you wrapped around it's double toes in under 2 days.

I have let Tassels out on a trial release. So far so good. But she is still making broody noises and flaring up.
But she hasn’t gone back to the nest for several hours and she is running around in the Goldenrod and Artemesia forests.
I had forgotten that she is quite bold towards me. She jumped up on my knee to demand treats.
Her comb is very pale - I assume that happens with broodies, and isn’t something I should worry about?
I guess roosting time will be the time I can tell if she has really given up.

So now that I know for sure I have chicks developing I have just under 2 weeks to make some decisions.
Option A. Brood them myself. Clean out the spot beside my computer desk and set up the brooder like I have done in the past. Being silkies, the dog crate will be big enough for them for 3 to 4 weeks before I put them outside. This will allow me to be a helicopter parent. This will also ensure optimal friendliness in the chicks. Again, being silkies they are born human friendly.

Option B: Bunny and or Spooky. Conviently Bunny went broody the day I set the eggs on the porch. Spooky followed suit 2 days later in the other nest box. Bunny is beyond experienced and has adopted chicks before. Spooky is unproven, but Marans x Silkie so has the genes to be a good mother. If I attempted to foster any onto her I would hover and be prepared to remove them the first sign she was going to reject them. This is the smartest thing to do. Broody raised chicks are so much smarter and in the long run healthier and grow faster. The drawbacks is I cannot be outside 24/7 to constantly supervise those first critical weeks. This is my only planned hatch this year.

Right now I am letting the girls sit on nothing. Incase I do decide to use them I want them ready. My head is telling me to let Bunny have them for well adjusted already integrated chicks. My heart is saying do it myself and deal with integration at a later date.
